Mandalay Bay, Cirque du Soleil and Estate of Michael Jackson confirms plans to celebrate Michael Jackson in Las Vegas

At a press conference at Mandalay Bay on Wednesday, April 27 plans were announced for the resort to be the home for “all things Michael Jackson” and a mecca for millions of his fans.

On hand to share details about their creative partnership were Daniel Lamarre, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cirque du Solei, John Branca, Co-Executor of The Michael Jackson Estate, Chuck Bowling, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino and Jamie King, Writer and Director of THE IMMORTAL World Tour. Also present was Michael Jackson’s older brother, Jackie Jackson who is creating a line of Michael Jackson jackets.

Through a collaboration with the estate of Michael Jackson and Cirque du Soleil, in an effort to pay tribute to the King of Pop, Mandalay Bay will launch a Jackson-themed lounge that will bring to life Michael’s music in an atmosphere celebrating his career and legacy; the Michael Jackson All Access Exhibit that will feature both Jackson memorabilia and interactive games; the IMMORTAL World Tour; a Michael Jackson Festival for Fans in conjunction with the tour, and a permanent show that will open at Mandalay Bay in early 2013.

The fan fest will be the first ever Estate-authorized Michael Jackson fan fest and will start on Dec. 3, 2011, the same day the IMMORTAL Tour opens at Mandalay Bay for one month. Fan fest will provide an opportunity for fans to go behind the scenes, an up close look at Jackson memorabilia, items from Neverland Ranch, and given photo opportunities in re-created sets from some of Jackson’s iconic music videos.

Jamie King, a dancer who worked with the “King of Pop ”on his 1992 Dangerous Tour was recruited as the writer and Director of THE IMMORTAL World Tour. King said he was approached by Cirque nine months ago to devise the show. During that time he put together, what he described as an “All Star, A team of the best dancers, acrobats, and musicians from around the world including many performers that have worked with Jackson and best represent him”. King said he is moving from Los Angeles to Cirque’s home base of Montreal to bring the show to life.

As part of his research for the show King paid a visit to Neverland. “The environment of the (touring) show is set in Neverland and it comes to life before your eyes in the arena. We are making that happen during the next six months. Though not there physically, his spirit and essence will be there. The music, lyrics and contents of the songs will lead us on a journey though Neverland and Michael. We uncover, discover and recover anything we wanted to know about Michael. I learned he was a great poet and artist,” said King.

It was explained that The Immortal Tour will tour for two years in North America and will be as close as you can get to a rock concert while the permanent show will be more theatrical, intimate and different. Also the directors and visions of the two shows will be different. As of yet, the title of the resident show has not been established.

"Michael Jackson was an international icon known for his music, dance, mystique and style. On behalf of the entire Mandalay Bay and MGM Resorts International teams, we are deeply honored and humbled to be home to incredible entertainment celebrating his legacy for new generations to come," said Chuck Bowling.
