It saddens me to report the recent deaths of two entertainment legends. Both were residents of Las Vegas.

Eydie Gorme, one of the greatest singers in the music industry, passed away at age 84 on Saturday, Aug. 10 at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas following a brief illness. A pop music staple since the 1950's, Gorme performed with her husband, singer Steve Lawrence as Steve and Eydie, in Las Vegas, the Catskills, and on numerous TV shows including Steve Allen's The Tonight Show and Ed Sullivan. As a solo artist, Gorme received a Grammy nomination in 1963 for her hit record “Blame It On The Bossa Nova”. Fluent in Spanish since childhood, her Spanish language recording of  “Amor" was a huge success in Spanish-speaking countries. Our hearts and prayers go out to Steve, whom she was married to for 55 years, their son, extended family and other loved ones.

Burlesque legend, Dixie Evans, who was known as the 'Marilyn Monroe of Burlesque, passed away at an assisted care facility in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 3rd, just months after she suffered a stroke. She was 86. A Las Vegas resident since 2006, she established the Burlesque Hall of Fame on Fremont Street in 2010.  Our sincere condolences go out to her family and friends. At this writing, a memorial service for the veteran performer has yet to be announced.

“It’s quite exciting to get our own Viva Vision show, seven minutes of 3D video animation from our early period done in that Pop Art style and using vintage footage. I am very intrigued to see the final show,” stated Daltrey.

“The Who has been at the top of our wish list for years and we are thrilled that they agreed to have their music featured on Viva Vision. I am sure that The Who – Miles Over Vegas will be a fabulous addition and will blow everyone away when it premieres this fall,” said Victor.

Viva Vision, the world’s largest video screen spanning five football fields, features customized light shows synced to smash hits from legendary bands every night of the week and include Bon Jovi – Wanted in Vegas, A Tribute to Queen, The Doors – Strange Days in Vegas and Heart – Crazy on Vegas.

Additional recent and upcoming “happenings” in and around Las Vegas include:

On Friday night, August 9, just a few weeks after attending the Grand Opening, I returned to CARMINE'S FAMILY STYLE ITALIAN RESTAURANT inside the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, to try a dish I didn't get to sample at the prior event. As a non meat eater, I love eggplant parmigiana but have never been happy after ordering it at a Las Vegas restaurant. That is, until I took my first bite of Carmine's beautifully prepared dish that is served, like every one of their dishes, in a huge platter, stacked high with enough to go around to satisfy between 3 to 5 people at a table.

Rather than breading the eggplant and then frying it in oil, which usually winds up being too greasy and mushy, at Carmine's the thinly sliced unbreaded eggplant is dipped in egg, layered, and topped with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese before being baked to perfection. The result is absolutely scrumptious, and I must say, the best eggplant parmigiana (priced at $27.95) I have ever eaten in a Las Vegas restaurant. Along with the entree which is listed on the menu as a “side dish” , the entire meal, which was shared with my husband and a colleague, included a bread basket filled with a variety of complimentary tasty breads, and an enormous mixed green salad filled with tomatoes, olives, peppercinis, red onions, radishes, and cucumbers (priced at $25.95). Everything on the reasonably priced, extensive menu featuring an array of meat, poultry, pasta and vegetarian offerings, promises to satisfy any palate. So, if you are hungry for a really exceptional eggplant parmigiana you must try Carmine's inside the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.
