Jan Rouven brings his ILLUSIONS to the Clarion Hotel

On July 19, new Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman proclaimed that day Jan Rouven Day. If you are not familiar with Rouven, you will be soon, once positive word of mouth gets out about Illusions, the thrilling, heart stopping show that Jan Rouven, the German born, master illusionist, recently opened at the Fame Theatre inside the Clarion Hotel and Casino.

Already a star in his native Germany, Rouven has been honored with some of the most important international awards of the entertainment industry such as the “Magician of the Year,” following magic greats David Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy; “Audience Award Monte Carlo Magic Stars” presented by Princess Stephanie of Monaco; and “Entertainer of the Year” which is selected by more than 37,000 members of the biggest magic society worldwide. During the past 10 years, Rouven has performed for audiences of up to 20,000 people. More than three million spectators have seen him live, and approximately 55 million people have been able to view his many television appearances.

I am a huge fan of magic and as such have seen almost every magic act that has performed In Las Vegas over the course of three decades I have lived here. So when I was invited to the official Grand Opening performance of Illusions on July 19, I couldn't wait to see what Rouven, the latest in a long list of Las Vegas “magic” headliners, had in store for his audience.

“A show in Las Vegas is the ultimate dream for most performers and after appearing at Fremont Street Experience for the past two years, I knew a permanent show had to be in the cards,” said Jan Rouven. “After touring Europe for many years, ILLUSIONS will allow me to reach a whole new audience and I am confident that my new show will be a crowd-pleasing production that will leave audiences in awe, and a little frightened.”

Suffice to say, he delivers the goods, with both his charming, audience pleasing manner, and as master of his craft. In his show, that runs approximately 75 minutes, audiences witness several tried and true illusions that have wowed audiences through the years. However, Rouven takes them to another level by adding his own stunning, unique twists.

In Illusions Rouven performs some hair raising, dangerous stunts that feature swords, fire, water and knives, that “appear” to put the young, raven haired performer's, and in one segment, even an audience volunteer's, life at risk. The death defying stunts include Bed of Death, Fire Spiker, and Hand Stab, where a volunteer from the audience plays Russian roulette with a sharp knife and the Water Tank in which the illusionist is cuffed and chained under water as the water level rises and his chance of surviving looks grim. Another illusion, magic act, stunt, whatever you wish to call it, has Rouven walking though a stacked wall of bricks. “I’m from Germany, where we know about walls,” he jokingly told the audience.

We all know that's impossible, but the trick is making people believe and as I watched him perform, I could see the jaw dropping reactions and hear people seated around me saying, “How does he do it?”

This isn't a one man show and Rouven is joined on stage by five, fabulously talented, professionally trained dancers, Gene Lonardo, Porcia Hendrix, Johanna Grajales, Taylor Crosta and Spencer Baumgart who act as his assistants and pump up the energy with spectacular choreography by Bradly Cleary set to chart topping hits such as Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and Katy Perry’s “ET”. Kudos also goes to the edgy, imaginative, eye dazzling costumes by Blair Farrington.

So, if you are a magic fan like me, I would advise you to check out this mesmerizing new show. Actually, don't take my word. You have to see it to believe it and discover for yourself it is well worth the experience.

Illusions astounds audiences Thursdays – Tuesdays (dark Wednesdays) at 7 p.m at The Clarion (formerly the Greek Isles), located at 305 Convention Center Drive, walking distance to the north end of The Strip and the Las Vegas Convention Center. Tickets start at $49.

Jubilee! Showgirls Shut Down Las Vegas Strip in Sign of Solidarity with the American Consumer

Thursday afternoon, July 21, Nearly 50 showgirls from Donn Arden’s Jubilee! at Bally’s Las Vegas shut down traffic on the famed Las Vegas Strip to rally against resorts that charge hidden resort fees to hotel guests. Las Vegas celebrity headliners Marie Osmond, Penn & Teller, Chippendales special musical guest star and former 98 Degrees star Jeff Timmons, Mac King, and Vinnie Favorito, as well as more than 100 Caesars Entertainment employees and company executives attended the rally in support of Caesars Entertainment’s city-wide “No Resort Fee” policy, which eliminates mandatory fees associated with hotel amenities at all of its Las Vegas properties.

Osmond launched the “No Resort Fees” savings clock on Bally’s Las Vegas digital marquee with a
public countdown exposing shocking figures – Las Vegas travelers are saving up to $1.16 per second,$100,000 per day and $3 million per month– a savings of $37 million to-date by staying at Caesars Entertainment resorts. The clock, which displays guest savings as of July 5, 2010, after the company’sacquisition of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, will reveal up-to-the-second figures achieved as a result of Caesars Entertainment’s “No Resort Fees” policy.

A vast majority of remaining Strip properties continue to charge travelers up to $20 per day in resort fees, which in some cases exceeds 40-percent of the advertised room rate. In 2010, Las Vegas guests spent an estimated $17 million per month on resort fees at hotel properties outside the Caesars Entertainment portfolio. Resort fees—which cover various hotel amenities ranging from pool entry,
fitness center access, internet service, bottled water, daily local newspaper access and valet parking—are often not made apparent to the hotel guest at the time of booking.

“It’s extremely important for visitors to the city to be aware of the high prices they could be paying in mandatory resort fees,” said Osmond, who headlines with her brother Donny at the Flamingo Las Vegas. “I am proud to be part of this key nitiative and even more proud to be headlining at a ‘No Resort Fees’ property.”

Also in attendance were Gary Selesner, president of Caesars Palace and Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino; David Hoenemeyer, president of Paris Las Vegas, Bally’s Las Vegas and Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino; and Rick Mazer president of Flamingo Las Vegas, Harrah’s Las Vegas, Imperial Palace and Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon.

“Caesars Entertainment Las Vegas resorts believe our hotel guests should choose how they want to spend their money,” said Caesars Palace President Gary Selesner. “We are committed to transparency in guest service transactions and believe this commitment will continue to build guest loyalty within our resorts.”

Insomniac Donates $75,000 from Electric Daisy Carnival Ticket Sales to Las Vegas Charities

Insomniac presented $75,000 to Las Vegas charities from funds raised through ticket sales at the 15th Annual Electric Daisy Carnival which was held June 24-26, 2011 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Clark County School-Community Partnership Program, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts and the Injured Police Officers Fund – Las Vegas each received checks for $25,000 at a presentation held at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

“This year’s festival was one of the best in Insomniac history, and we are incredibly appreciative of the Las Vegas community joining together to welcome us and assist with a memorable event,” said Pasquale Rotella, Insomniac’s CEO and founder.  “We are thrilled to be able to present $25,000 donations to key organizations that will only help improve the city where our fans and partners reside.”

The Clark County School-Community Partnership Program connects business and community resources with schools to enrich the educational experience and increase student achievement. The Clark County School-Community Partnership Program began in 1983 as a pilot program of seven schools partnered with seven businesses. Since that time, it has grown to hundreds of partnerships with programs that range from kindergarten to twelfth grade, from tutorial programs to scholarships, from science activities to fine arts programs.  Insomniac’s partnership will help support, supplement and complement Arts Education Programs in Clark County public schools.

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is a public/private partnership, opening in 2012, which will become the centerpiece of cultural life in Las Vegas. In December 2010, The John F. Kennedy Center chose The Smith Center as the fourth partner city for Any Given Child, a program that will create a long-range arts education plan for Las Vegas area students.  The program will incorporate existing resources of the Las Vegas school system, along with those of local arts organizations and the Kennedy Center to ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive a solid and meaningful arts education.

The Injured Police Officers Fund (IPOF) was formed in October 1982 to help reduce the financial burden suffered by police officers and their families in the event of a line of duty injury or death by providing monetary assistance to these officers and their families.  IPOF currently assists over 8,000 officers and their families in Nevada.

Insomniac will be making additional donations to other charities in the upcoming weeks to finalize distribution of the funds raised at Electric Daisy Carnival.

Guest Wins an Engagement Ring from Slot Machine at Bally’s Las Vegas

It is said, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”, but that is'nt the case for two visiting tourists and a handful of those who witnessed an important moment. There is little chance they won’t share the story of this weekend for years to come.

Las Vegas visitor Jim Canfield popped the question to his girlfriend, Paige, at Bally’s Las Vegas with the help of the property’s gaming staff.  The couple traveled from San Diego to celebrate her birthday, but Canfield had other plans in store.  The famous Colossus slot machine inside Bally’s Casino was arranged beforehand so it would land on the words “Will You Marry Me” when Canfield’s girlfriend pulled the handle. Shocked and surprised, she could not stop smiling and laughing as Canfield got down on one knee with a ring in hand.  He affirmed that Bally’s Las Vegas will always hold a special place in his heart. Vegas was the perfect location for the proposal as he said, “I feel like I hit the jackpot when I met her so I wanted her to feel like she hit the jackpot today.”

After accepting the creative proposal, the couple kissed and posed for the cameras and onlookers that had gathered around the oversized slot machine nicknamed “Big Bertha.”  The newly engaged couple then celebrated the special occasion with a romantic dinner at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Las Vegas.
