Magicians and Friends Celebrate the Life of The Amazing Johnathan at Plaza Hotel

The invitations said “not a prank” in reference to the Memorial/Celebration of Life for The Amazing Johnathan (real name Johnathan Szeles) who passed away on February 22, 2002, and was well known as not just a comedy magician but also a prankster. The event, which was held Monday afternoon, March 7 in the showroom of the Plaza Hotel in downtown Las Vegas was hosted by blonde bombshell, funny lady Penny Wiggins, Johnathan's close friend and former onstage sidekick/partner.

Attendees in the packed showroom included entertainers Elisa Furr, Ben Stone, Jasmine Trias, Jarrett Parker, Raja Rahman, Kelly Vohnn, Shayma Tash, Doug Leferovich, Mike Hammer, Dave Johnson, Melanie Kramer and Kevin Lepine, just to name a few, as well as members of the media (including yours truly) and many, many other friends and fans of the beloved entertainer.

It was an afternoon filled with laughter, sarcasm, raunchy moments, memories and heartfelt tributes to the Amazing Johnathan shared by several of his good friends and colleagues including Jonathan Scott (Property Brothers), Mac King (who jokingly described the event as a "Dead Person Roast), David Copperfield (via a video clip), Tape Face, Carrot Top, Bizzaro, Criss Angel, Harrison Greenbaum, and many more. Words used to describe Johnathan were “madman, chaotic and dangerous”. But on the other side of the coin he was also “a sweetheart, dear, down to earth and genuine.  And, as stated, “he played a fool, but he was definitely not. Rather, he was a great entertainer, who knew how to craft comedy.”

The world of entertainment has lost a talented performer.  For sure, The Amazing Johnathan was one of a kind. He will be missed...but never forgotten!

Non-profit CORE was recently awarded funds totaling more than $500,000 through two grants from the City of Las Vegas. The vital funds will help the non-profit continue to build an infrastructure for success that offers long-term holistic support for under-resourced students and their families. CORE is on a mission to ensure that historically underserved students and families can achieve economic mobility to lead choice-filled lives.

The funds strategically align with the organization’s goal to secure a combination of public and private funding, noting that it takes long-term, whole-community investments to solve whole-community problems including achieving equity in historically under-resourced communities. Additionally, the funds help ensure that CORE is on track to meet its goal of 5 by 2025 – serving at five school sites in Southern Nevada by the end of 2025.
