Married
Rock Star Photographers Make a Dynamic Duo
Maryanne Bilham is an award winning photographer who has photographed
many rock stars including Carlos Santana, U2, Blondie, Dave Navarro,
Courtney Love, John 5 and Sheryl Crow. Her portfolio also includes
portraitures, live concerts, and advertising campaigns for the Hard Rock
Hotel, The Rio Hotel and many other major companies.

She is also known for her photography of noted celebrities and
musicians.
Maryanne is proud of her photograph on the cover of the album of The Go
Go’s, “God Bless the Go Go’s”. Maryanne wanted their image of good time
girls to look like saints and she just happened to be working on a
project called Divine Eros that gave her the idea for their album.

In a style of modern day prayer cards, Divine Eros was a personal
exhibition of her interpretations of female saints and mystics. It
seemed like the perfect image for the album cover.

It took more than 3 months to complete this project and the results have
an angelic sweetness. The project gives an understanding of a connection
between the women mystics and the divine that shows the qualities of the
heart we all possess.
Outside of Guitar Center’s entrance on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles is a
20 foot photo, taken by Maryanne. It features the guitarist John 5
floating in the air on his guitars.

She also has had her work displayed at the Grammy Art of Music Exhibit
at Caesars Palace Las Vegas and the Kodak Rock X-posed Exhibit at The
Rio Las Vegas.
I was most impressed with her photo of “Christina the Astonishing”.

From the moment I saw it I was mesmerized by the haunting image. It felt
like I was being taken back in time and I was somehow a part of the
picture. I found myself asking so many questions because I wanted to
know everything about the lady in the water. Christina the Astonishing,
as the story goes could live for days underwater in the River Meuse.
Christina was a 13th century Saint. The model used is a diver and it was
shot in a black bottomed swimming pool in Hollywood. Air tubes were
dropped to her during the shooting as Maryanne conceptualized, directed,
and shot, and breathed life into it. In 2003 Maryanne received a second
place award in the International Photography Award underwater section.
The image is stunning.
Recently, I sat in the living room of Maryanne and Robert Knight’s home.
As I admired the many photos displayed on the walls of the rock stars
they have photographed they shared information with me about their
upcoming projects.

Maryanne told me she is working on a new exhibition project entitled
“Fascinatrix” inspired by the original Burlesque Queens, but is creating
her own fantasy characters. The show deals with eroticism and the art of
seduction. I introduced my friend Tempest Storm a couple of weeks ago to
Maryanne and she was very excited to work with the original burlesque
queen who introduced the world to the art of seduction and tease with
class. Included in the gallery will be Sheila Joy, one of the burlesque
dancers who performs in “40 Deuce” at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Dori, a
dancer at Cat House at the Luxor.

As a married couple, rock photographers Robert Knight and Maryanne
Bilham make up a dynamic duo. Robert has shot iconic rock stars,
including the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Janis Joplin,
Rod Stewart, Led Zeppelin just to name a few and some of his
photographs are on display at Symbolic Gallery on Dean Martin Drive in
Las Vegas. He also has a gallery in Los Angeles and his photographic
images are on the outside of 216 Guitar Centers in the U.S. Robert has
one of the largest music photographic archives in the world and many of
his star subjects have remained his personal friends.

A feature length documentary has just been completed Robert Knight’s
life and career. Rock Prophecies was in the making for 14 months under
the direction of John Chester. The film is being submitted for the
2008-2009 festival circuit. Maryanne plays two roles in the making of
the documentary; first, as part of the duo who is instrumental in their
partnership and relationship, and second, as the still photographer for
the documentary.

As they crossed the U.S. and England, a span of over 40 years was
covered in the telling of Robert’s life story, which shows his mastery
in capturing the images of the rock and roll stars. He has come a long
way since 1968 when he first shot Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Jeff
Beck.

A book on Robert’s life is also in the making of Robert’s life which
should be fascinating.
The Knights lead exciting lives. It was a pleasure to spend time with
them and I am proud to call them my friends.
