InkFest
Did you know that over 52 million people in North America have tattoos?
That is one in six people. I am not in that group, but after attending
the Inkfest that was held for three days, June 28, 29 and 30 at the
Riviera Hotel and Casino, I now want a tattoo. I was amazed by the
artists who sat hour after hour working on hundreds of people, creating
fabulous tattoos, starting from the top of their heads to the bottom of
their feet. They were completely covered with tattoos.

Here’s an interesting tidbit. Angelina Jolie’s new tattoo is the
latitude and longitude of the birthplaces of her adopted children which
had tattooed over the lasered off Billy Bob Thornton tattoo. Brad Pitt
has Arabic script on his lower back.
I had the privilege to sit with a master artist Darrin White as he gave
workshops on his portrait tattoos. He worked meticulously and with great
care and was so careful to keep a clean environment. White changed his
gloves so many times that I lost track of how many he used. It was
fascinating to watch the step by step procedure of creating the image on
the computer, placing it on the body and then using his own special
needles (22 needles in one) as he worked for over two hours on a leg.
Starting at the young age of 18, Darrin now has over 19 years of
experience as a tattoo artist.

Eric Spangler was assisting him at the seminar and he proudly showed off
his “Marty Engel” tattoo that Darrin had did on him years ago.
It really did look like Marty Engel.
Darrin was booked solid for the entire time he was at the Inkfest
convention. Even after all the hours of working, he never got tired and
I know that was because he loves what her does. He was so patient and
took his time explaining every thing so his students could learn or just
refresh and confirm what they knew. When finished, the tattoo was
stunning.
I asked Darrin why his work looked so real and he said “work off your
gut and trust yourself”. A lot of people trust him because he is in
demand. I definitely would trust him to work on me.
Contests were held during InkFest for the Best Ink of the Day, Best Ink
of the Weekend, Body Piercing as well as a competition to crown Ms. Ink
Fest. ChaCha from Las Vegas won the title of Ms. Ink Fest 2008.
The women looked great.
Mr. & Mizuz Inkaholik had a wedding ceremony in the convention room and
shared a graveyard cake with everyone. Mizuz holds the previous 2 titles

Enigma is also known as the Puzzle Man and stars in the “Electric Acid
Theater. He swallowed a glowing sword, had fire sparks shot on his face,
and then, with a tube down his throat he pumped liquid in his stomach,
extracted it, put it into a glass and had his assistant drink it. I had
to walk away from that one. It is definitely not for the faint of heart.

A group called “Swing Shift Side Show” showcased a stage of non stop
performers. They swallowed swords, put nails up their nose and Andrew S.
lifted a huge weight on a chain hooked below his eyes.

Andrew also revealed a body piercing in his private part that was
stretched out and held open by a large ring. He had people come on stage
and put their hand through the ring. It was an unbelievable sight to
see.
Besides the chainsaw mayhem, performers utilized swords, hammers, axes,
pitchforks, grinders and spikes in their “act”. There were more acts,
but most of the time I had to look away.
“Swing Shift Side Show” is a show like nothing I have ever seen. So, if
