The Yellow Brick Road to 'The Wizard'
The Wizard is a multi media musical, being presented at the Greek Isle
Casino in Las Vegas for a limited engagement. The musical
celebrates the life of Harold Arlen, who wrote some of the greatest hits
in the 30’s and 40’s and is considered to be one of the greatest
composers of the 20th century. The show is narrated by Sam Arlen and it
brings you back to the early 30’s with a walk through Harold’s life and
his great songs.

Sam Arlen tells the story of how his father’s career began and the music
he wrote that are now classics, namely the entire score of “The Wizard
of Oz”. Along with the music, rare home movies of Oz are shown on a
screen bringing back memories of the beloved classic fim.

It is a touching personal story of Sam Arlen's family and the setting,
utilizing the format of an old time radio broadcast is simple and
effective.
Cast members George Bugatti and The Three Crooners, Missy Shriver and
Genevieve are superb especially Genevieve, who brings the house down
with her rendition of “Stormy Weather” and “Minnie The Moocher’s Wedding
Day”.

Bringing the audience back to the era of the 1920's the musical is set
in the Cotton Club in Harlem. It was the time of Cab Callaway and Duke
Ellington and Harold Arlen wrote many hits featured in the club’s shows.
The famous, unforgettable song “Stormy Weather” was created there.

Add to that the 5 piece band, and we had a walk down memory lane with
all the fabulous hits of Harold Arlen.

Harold has written over 500 songs and won an academy award for the best
song in 1939's motion picture, “Over The Rainbow”. It also has been
recognized as the number one song of the century by the Recording
Industry Association of America.

Harold Arlen was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971. Not
too many people even realize how many famous songs were written by him
but now that the show “The Wizard” is playing, more people will be
informed.
The cast met with everyone after the show, which is always a great
thrill for everyone, and it was a pleasure talking with each of the up
close and personal.

On an added note: the show is produced by Perry Damone, the son of Vic
Damone.
