Earth,
Wind & Fire
I was one of the fortunate few that had an opportunity to attend the
sound check of the legendary Earth, Wind & Fire from Sunny 106.5 as they
were preparing for their New Years Eve performance at the Venetian
Resort Hotel. It was exciting to watch this talented and electrifying
group who have a unique sound all their own.

The sound and lighting was great and the crowd loved it. I don’t know
what it is about these old time bands that brings back so many good
memories. Maybe it is because we are older and appreciate who we are now
and what we were then. Listening to their music warms the soul and
touches the heart and brings peace into our inner being.
Love is what the audience experienced while watching this magnificent
group.
Earth Wind and Fire performed “That’s The Way Of The World”, from one of
their best albums that introduced a mix of R & B and Pop. It was one of
the finest recordings of the 70’s. Another song was “September” which
had a soulful sway and an up tempo beat that made our heads bop and our
feet tap causing lots of positive energy. “After The Love Has
Gone" had the same effect especially with the sax solo. Each song
performed by the group was dramatic with rich harmonies.
Earth, Wind & Fire was formed in 1969 in Chicago, Illinois by Maurice
White who named the group after three of the elements in his personal
astrological chart. In 1970 White's brother Verdine joined the group.
Warner brothers signed them up and their first album was released in
1972 entitled “Last Days and Time”. Movie soundtracks followed and
“Shining Star” went to the top of the R & B charts. The album won a
Grammy and then went double platinum.

Thus began a run of chart success. In the years that followed the band
went on to solo careers and then re-united in 1987 for the album “Touch
the World”. In 2000 they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of
Fame. They have been touring the country and in January 2008 they will
be in Brazil, Uruguay & Chile followed by Germany and the Netherlands in
March 2008.

It was exciting to watch the band prepare and rehearse for their
performance. And as a special treat, the band took time out to talk and
sign autographs. The ballroom was being prepared to hold over 1000 fans
and I was visualizing the energy that would be created later that
evening for their New Year's Eve show.

Mike & Tom Chase
This was a great ending for the year and a wonderful beginning for 2008.
We look forward to seeing Earth Wind and Fire back in Las Vegas.
