Sinatra Dance With Me Premiers at Encore Theatre at Wynn Las Vegas

Had he lived, Frank Sinatra would have turned 95 on December 12. To celebrate and honor the beloved crooner and Las Vegas icon’s birthday, SINATRA Dance With Me held its premiere performance in the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas on December 11, 2010 for a limited engagement.

Sinatra Dance With Me is the brainchild of renowned and accomplished choreographer, Twyla Tharp. This is a shortened version of her Broadway production "Come Fly Away," which played in New York City earlier this year and was nominated for two Tony Awards, including Tharp's choreography. With endorsement of the Sinatra family, Tharp conceived, directed and choreographed the show that showcases a cast of 14 dancers performing mesmerizing dance routines set to the original recorded vocals of Frank Sinatra backed by a live 17 piece backup band. The show's score combines classic vocal performances from the Sinatra catalog and archives standards including "Fly Me To The Moon," "My Way" and "That's Life" along with signature Sinatra arrangements (Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Quincy Jones) and some brand new orchestrations for this innovative production.

SINATRA Dance With Me is the perfect blend of song and dance with each complementing the other. The show follows four couples whose complicated love stories interconnect at a swinging nightclub. The music is great and the dancers are nothing short of magnificent, drawing the audience into every dance number, as they gracefully and effortlessly glide through the air and across the stage in rhythm to the music. In addition, as couples, the dancers exude an amazing chemistry and bring an emotional depth to each dance sequence whether performing a lively number or a more seductive romantic piece.

SINATRA Dance With Me is the next and most elaborate chapter in one of the most exciting collaborations in contemporary dance. Twyla Tharp's creative relationship with the music of Frank Sinatra began in 1976 with the premiere of Once More Frank, a duet created for the American Ballet Theatre and performed by Tharp and Mikhail Baryshnikov. The collaboration continued with Nine Sinatra Songs, Tharp's acclaimed piece for 14 dancers, and was followed by Sinatra Suite, featuring Baryshnikov.

Twyla Tharp, Frank Sinatra’s daughters Tina and Nancy and two of his granddaughters, Amanda and A.J. attended the opening night performance at Wynn. Appearing on stage at the close of the show, Nancy thanked the fabulous cast of dancers saying that they are “death defying athletes that also dance and with every lift, makes our hearts soar”. She addressed Tharp as “an American treasure; an absolute genius and (referring to Frank’s music) one of the best keepers of the flame.”

Steve Wynn, who was seated in the audiences added, “You (Tharp) have given movement and dimension to great lyrics and great songs”.
I totally agree. With the combined talents of Sinatra, Tharp and her fabulous cast, audiences are promised an evening of exquisite entertainment.

Performances for Sinatra Dance With Me at Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas are 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday through January 29, 2011. The show is 80 minutes without intermission. Dark on Sundays.

Ticket prices are $69 and $89, plus tax and service charge.
