VEGAS! The Show Opens at the Saxe Theatre

Producer David Saxe's latest creative endeavor, Vegas! The Show recently opened at his Saxe Theatre inside Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. Undeniably, it is his best show yet.

To say this show is good would be an understatement. I loved it and hope it will have a long and successful run. The title could not be more fitting because Vegas! The Show offers audiences just what they would want from a quintessential Las Vegas show by delivering a fantastic musical tribute to Las Vegas entertainers that put the city on the map as the entertainment capital of the world.

Opening with the stage set in a Neon sign graveyard, a guard named Ernie shares his memories of old Vegas, and then asks the audience, “For one night only, to suspend reality and join us on a journey back in time to experience some of the greatest entertainers who ever played Vegas.”

And so begins an historical and highly entertaining 90 minute trip down memory lane that takes us back to the glitz and glamour of old Vegas through the decades and up to the present with loving homages to famous entertainers such as Keely Smith and Louis Prima (at the Kasbah Lounge), Lena Horne and Judy Garland, Elvis, Sammy Davis Jr, The Rat Pack (Frank, Dean and Sammy), Gladys Knight and the Pips, Sonny and Cher, Tina Turner and Tom Jones. A tribute to Elton John shows him accompanied by video footage of some of the old Vegas landmark casinos being imploded to make way for newer, present day mega resorts.

Slick and well paced, the dynamic, high energy production boasts excellent staging, lighting, dazzling costumes, an exceptional, outstanding cast of singers, dancers and musicians. The direction/choreography by Tiger Martina is fantastic and his Broadway influence shines through every dance number and style including a “jump and jiving” swing routine. The high kicking, Can Can is in a class by itself, unlike any other you've seen before.

Of course, no spectacular Las Vegas show would be complete without gorgeous, leggy showgirls and specialty acts. In fact, the amazing tap dancing by identical twins Sean and John is a showstopper. No one epitomized the glitz, talent and yes, glamour of Vegas more than the original King of Bling, Liberace. As a tribute to the late, colorful showman there is a performance by a piano playing Liberace marionette with magician Joseph Gabriel pulling the strings. Later, Gabriel returns to mystify the audience with his magic act.

Vegas! The Show has it all. I can't praise the production enough. Vegas entertainment doesn't get any better than this. Go see the show and be a part of history.

Vegas! The Show is offering a special 2 for one ticket price for locals (who show a local ID) through September. Tickets start at $79.99 with a $20 upgrade to a dinner package available. Performances are nightly at 7 and 9 pm, ex-cluding Thursdays. For more information, check out the website: www.saxetheater.com.
