Henderson Announces Winners of the Heritage Parade

The City of Henderson revealed the winners from the Heritage Parade, which was held Saturday, April 21 in the historic Water Street District. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three floats, including The Journey Church, 1st Place, $1,000; Campbell’s Can, 2nd Place, $750; and Foothill High School’s float, “Magnificent Education for All,” 3rd Place, $500, as well as $500 to the People’s Choice Award winner, Burkholder Middle School.

Nearly 70 entries were judged on three criteria - incorporation of theme, creativity and overall appeal. This year’s parade theme was “Magnesium to Magnificent,” a play on Henderson’s rich history, from its beginnings as a small industrial town built to supply magnesium during World War II to its official incorporation in 1953 and as it stands today, a vision to be America’s premier community. To honor Henderson’s patriotic roots, four airmen from Nellis Air Force Base served as this year’s parade grand marshals.

Now in its third year, the People’s Choice Award allowed residents, either watching the parade live or at home on Cox Channel 96, to vote for their favorite entry via text message. This year saw recording-breaking numbers with more than 6,200 votes tabulated over a three-hour time period. Once again, Burkholder Middle School Marching Band was crowned the champion, marking the ensemble’s third consecutive People’s Choice win, as well as solidifying the group in history as the only Heritage Parade entry to ever win the People’s Choice Award.

Other parade winners were the Zelzah Shriners, 1st Place; Green Valley High School Marching Band, 2nd Place; and Brown Junior High School Marching Band, 3rd Place. Each received ribbons for their participation.

Held every April, the Heritage Parade & Festival is a special birthday celebration for Henderson. The event, which honored the city’s 59th anniversary, brought the community together to enjoy a variety of family-friendly festivities, which included the Heritage Parade, classic car show, live entertainment, international food, games and more at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, in the Water Street District.

Just hours after O' SHEAS CASINO, the popular Strip-side casino, permanently shut its doors, the property’s seven-story parking garage was demolished to make room for The LINQ, a $550 million dollar entertainment, retail and dining corridor set to open in 2013. The seven-story structure was successfully brought down at 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1 using a construction technique referred to as an implosion, a process whereby very small quantities of explosives are used to disrupt the building’s ability to support itself, allowing the building to fall to the ground in a controlled fashion under its own weight.
