The Smith Center for the Performing Arts Marks a New Era for Las Vegas

With the opening of the highly anticipated $470 million Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Las Vegas has entered a new era, one that will forever change the way the world views the ever growing city in the desert. Although considered the entertainment capital of the world for its gaming, headline acts and glitzy production shows on and off the strip, Las Vegas has never been a city known for arts and culture... that is until now.

It took 18 years from its conception to realization, but now that the project is completed, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts fulfills the community’s dream of having its very own cultural centerpiece for residents to experience and enjoy. Located in the heart of the new 61-acre urban development, Symphony Park in downtown Las Vegas, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is a world class cultural complex that will rank Las Vegas among the top international performing arts centers, with its celebration of artistic excellence, education and culture from around the world.

The Smith Center will offer a blend of performances by resident companies including the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Ballet Theatre, as well as first-run touring attractions.  The complex will feature music, comedy, theater, and dance companies who celebrate international cultures. For Las Vegas residents aching to see a Broadway show, there will be no need to travel to New York or Los Angeles,  because as part of the Broadway Las Vegas series, The Smith Center will host the best and brightest of Broadway.  Scheduled to perform on the Smith Center's magnificent stage are touring companies  of THE COLOR PURPLE (April 3rd – 8th), MARY POPPINS (May 22nd – 27th), MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET (June 12th – 17th) and  MEMPHIS (July 18th – 22nd). These exceptional shows join the ranks of the previously announced WICKED, which will open The Smith Center’s first full-length season in August of 2012.

Venues in the 5 acre cultural complex include the magnificent 2,050-seat main performance area in Reynolds Hall, complete with stunning balconies, a dramatic stage and a full orchestra pit capable of seating up to 100 musicians;  Boman Pavilion’s unique 258-seat Cabaret Jazz Theatre, ideal for jazz, cabaret and other performances best experienced in an intimate setting; and the 250-seat Troesh Studio Theater, ideal for rehearsals, children’s theater, community events and private social gatherings. The Smith Center will also be home to a 1.7 acre park, which can be used for outdoor concerts .  In addition, the complex will be the new location of the Discovery Children’s Museum.

In the education wing, national and international teaching artists  will conduct workshops for teachers and students, connecting the arts to all areas of the curriculum.  The Smith Center will also  stage many performances, workshops and master classes for students in our community.

Unfortunately, I was out of town and could not attend the media preview tour of the Smith Center on the morning of March 1, but arrived back in time for the evenings special "Hard Hat" concert by country superstar Randy Travis in Reynolds Hall where he performed for the men and women who helped build the spectacular cultural center, before the invitation-only opening night gala March 10. Travis put on a great concert for the construction workers and the fabulous venue was a major factor in creating a memorable experience.  No matter where you are seated in the multi leveled, state of the art theatre, the view of the stage is unobstructed and the acoustics are top notch. Of course, that evening offered just a sampling of what to expect when seated in the audience for any upcoming performance staged in this theatre.

To celebrate the official opening of the Smith Center of the Performing Arts, on Saturday, March 10, The Smith Center will present a one-of-a-kind night of entertainment featuring an unprecedented line-up of 24 artists from the worlds of music, television, stage and screen. Doors open at 7:00pm and curtain rises at 8:00pm for the Black Tie Event. Actor Neil Patrick Harris will host the celebration which will feature performances by singer/Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson; country artists Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris and Martina McBride; singer songwriter Carole King; trumpeter Arturo Sandoval; violinist Joshua Bell; gospel great Mavis Staples; Train lead singer Pat Monahan; and American Ballet Theater dancers Marcello Gomes and Luciana Paris.

Broadway will be represented by current stage stars including Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell (Kiss Me Kate, Man of La Mancha, Ragtime) Laura Osnes (Grease, South Pacific, Anything Goes), Cheyenne Jackson (television’s Glee, 30 Rock and Broadway’s Finian’s Rainbow, All Shook Up), Sherie Rene Scott (Aida, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Little Mermaid, Women on the Verge), Montego Glover (Memphis, Color Purple) and Benjamin Walker (Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson, Inherit the Wind).

The Smith Center opening is being produced and directed by George Stevens, Jr., and Michael Stevens, who produce the Kennedy Center Honors each year. The performance will be taped for a national television broadcast at a later date

The Smith Center’s Opening Celebration will offer 12 days of events - from performances to a one- of-a-kind open house that promises to be part of a legacy that will last for generations.

Madame Tussauds Las Vegas, located at the Venetian, welcomed its newest wax figure, Celine Dion to the attraction’s Viva Vegas room on Wednesday, Feb. 29. Dion’s figure, dressed in a sparkling gold mini dress and black high heels, is shown rocking the stage with microphone in hand surrounded by a custom-designed space emulating her stage at Caesars Palace, complete with a baby grand piano.  The figure features a stunning recreation of her natural, glowing stage makeup.  Her flowing blonde locks contain four different colors of real human hair, with each strand having to be individually inserted.

In honor of the superstar’s wax immortalization, the Clark County Children’s Choir (CCCC) made a special appearance to perform Dion’s award-winning song “My Heart Will Go On.”

Additional recent and upcoming happenings include:

It saddens me to report that Davy Jones, actor and lead singer of the 1960s group The Monkees, died of a massive heart attack Wednesday in Indiantown, Florida, where he lived. He was 66. He is survived by his wife, Jessica and four daughters.

In recent years, Jones performed as a solo artist in Las Vegas, drawing thousands of fans to his concerts from his earlier years as a pop idol.  A few years back, he also attended the annual Canon Customer Appreciation Gala, where I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with the still boyish looking celebrity on the red carpet.  For yours truly, it was a memorable experience that took me back to my pre teen years.

Add Davy Jones' name to the list of music icons who have passed away and will be missed. Our sincere condolences goes out to his family and close friends.

Other local "Happenings" include:

Big Elvis, entertainer at Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon, marked 10 exemplary years performing on the Las Vegas Strip, more than 7,000 performances and his birthday with a special Pete “Big Elvis” Vallee Day Mayor’s proclamation on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Rick Mazer, Regional President of Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon presented Big Elvis with the official proclamation. Big Elvis performs all the hits of the King of Rock & Roll, as well as other popular tunes in the genres of rock, country, gospel, R&B and pop spanning six decades of music. Big Elvis interacts with his audience, invites them to participate in his show and performs requests, including both popular and obscure songs. During his renditions of Elvis ballads, Big Elvis shows his warm heart and bares his soul to the extent that there is not a dry eye in the room.
