Rick Faugno Premieres His One Man Show “Songs My Idols Sang (And Danced)! At the South Point

On Sunday afternoon August 22, Broadway veteran Rick Faugno, one of two actors who portray Frankie Valli in the Las Vegas production of Jersey Boys at The Palazzo, debuted his one man show, Songs My Idols Sang (and Danced), to a sold out audience in the main showroom at the South Point Hotel Casino.

006-RickFaugnoPRPhoto3
Rick Faugno

The show gave 30 year old Faugno a chance to break out on his own and showcase his amazing talents as a song and dance man. Rick spent several months creating and developing the show with his musical director Keith Thompson and with his wife, Joyce, a fellow Broadway performer. The show is based on his life’s story in show business, and how he got to where he is today. In Songs My Idols Sang (And Danced) pays tribute to the people in his life including his parents, grandparents, dance teachers (including famed dancer/choreographer Tommy Tune), soul mate Joyce who provided support, and to the song and dance icons that he looked up to and inspired him while growing up as a kid in New Jersey.

The 80-minute musical showcase featured photo clips and anecdotes from his background interspersed with musical numbers. Faugno spoke about how, from an early age “something had clicked” and he knew what he wanted to do the rest of his life; to be a song and dance man and actor just like a major influence in his life, Fred Astaire. Faugno said he had always dreamed of being a “contemporary” Astaire as well as “peer” of another song and dance icon, Gene Kelly. While noone will ever be able to fill their shoes, Faugno entertained the audience with proof that he is indeed a multi talented performer and great showman in his own right.

Accompanied by a seven-piece band made up of Keith Thompson (Rick’s musical director from Jersey Boys) on piano; Tyler Williams on bass, Don Meoli on drums; Drew Zingg on guitar; Danny Falcone on trumpet; Kevin Stout on trombone; and Matt Taylor on sax and flute Faugno paid tribute in song and dance to Astaire (I’m In Heaven, Dancing in the Dark, Puttin’ On The Ritz) Gene Kelly (Our Love Is Here to Stay) as well as several other of his favorite performers, Tony Bennett (I Left My Heart in San Franciso), Frank Sinatra (I’ve Got You Under My Skin), Nat King Cole (Embraceable You) Sammy Davis Jr. (Mr. Bojangles, I Wanna Be You from the musical Golden Boy).

RickFaugnoPRPhoto1
Rick Faugno

Faugno has built an impressive list of theatre, film and television credits. He recently performed on the 63rd Annual Tony Awards, where he represented the Las Vegas production of Jersey Boys. Some of his theatre credits include Broadway performances in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Conversations With My Father, Wonderful Town, Fosse, The Will Rogers Follies, and the national tours of Jersey Boys, The Boy Friend, and Fosse. Television credits include the Kennedy Center's 25th Anniversary Gala on PBS. Faugno holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Acting and Theatre from New York University.

Due to the overwhelming demand for tickets to Rick Faugno's show, The South Point added another performance for Songs My Idols Sang (and Danced) scheduled for Sunday, September 20 at 3 p.m. If you were not fortunate to buy a ticket, it is too late. Tickets for the second show were completely sold out within 48 hours from the time they went on sale. If that doesn’t make a statement about this Jersey Boy, nothing does.

Southern California Sculptor Donates Art for Health at Nevada Cancer Institute

Nevada Cancer Institute (NCVI) recently installed four sculptures on its campus, continuing its commitment to providing an environment dedicated toward healing. The sculptures were donated by Southern California artist Simi Dabah, who understands that an important aspect of the healing process for patients includes art.

Dabah’s avocation of creating sculptures and donating them to nonprofit organizations makes his art invaluable. For more than 30 years, Dabah has been using recycled scrap metal to create an array of welded steel sculptures that admirers can interpret on their own. Dabah’s sculptures range in size from six inches to 32 feet in height, many weighing over a ton. The steel surfaces are left in their natural state and allowed to continue rusting to a warm patina.

The four untitled designs at NVCI, like Dabah’s other works, are labors of artistic passion that compliment NVCI’s vision to provide a therapeutic atmosphere for cancer patients and their families. The sculptures were installed around the campus, one between the treatment facility and the support services building; two in front of the under-construction Ralph and Betty Engelstad Cancer Research building; and one at the entrance to the Abe & Louise Jaramillo Garden of Hope at NVCI. Two smaller sculptures donated by Dabah will be auctioned off by the Institute at its annual Rock for the Cure fundraising gala in November.
