During my recent vacation on a cruise ship in the Pacific Ocean, the news traveled to all on board about the deaths of Ed MacMahon, actress Farrah Fawcett, and then the shocking news that music icon/The King of Pop, Michael Jackson succumbed to a fatal heart attack.

It never seems to fail that deaths of famous people come in threes.  Shortly after the three had passed on, word came that three other well known show business personalities had left this world.  Gale Storm, the former singer/actress who starred in two situation comedies during the 1950’s "My Little Margie" and "The Gale Storm Show: Oh! Susanna," died on June 27 of natural causes. She was 87. The next day, June 28 TV pitchman Billy Mays, known as the king of infomercials died suddenly in his home as the result of  a pulmonary embolism, or blocked artery.  He was 50 years old.  That same day master impressionist Fred Travalena, known as The Man of a Thousand Faces, had passed away at his home in Encino, California after losing his battle with cancer.  He was 66.

fredtblueshirt billy-mays galestorm22
Fred Travalena           Billy Mays               Gale Storm

Travalena was a former Las Vegas headliner, a regular guest on late night talk shows in the 70’s and 80’s, as well as singer and actor.  I had a personal connection to Travalena although I never had the chance to meet him.  Both he and I were born in the Bronx, New York and I first heard about him long before he made it big in show business. When I was in my teens, my beloved Aunt Rhoda had often spoken of him kindly as her apartment neighbor and friend. I remember her telling me that he was a very talented performer who was destined for stardom. Unfortunately, she didn’t live to see her friend achieve the success she had predicted.

My sincere condolences go out to the families of these well known personalities who are no longer with us.

On a more uplifting note, let me start this week’s column off with a human interest piece that shows another side of “sin city”.

Local Residents Receive New Air Conditioning Units From Contractors 4th Annual Mission Cool Off

The Whitaker family, who reside in North Las Vegas, were recently granted a brand new home air conditioning and heating system as recipients in this year’s 4th Annual Mission Cool Off program sponsored by the Nevada State Contractors Board and the Southern Nevada Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Service Contractors Association (SNARSCA).

A three-ton Goodman central air conditioning unit was donated and installed in the Whitaker home near Lake Mead Blvd. and Carey Ave. on June 16 by technical crews from Yes! Air Conditioning and Plumbing of Las Vegas. “Our entire company takes great pride in participating in community programs like Mission Cool Off.  We enjoy helping families in need throughout the Las Vegas Valley,” Lance Fernandez, general manger of Yes! Air Conditioning & Plumbing, said.

“It gives us great peace of mind to have a reliable system. This new air conditioner is 35% more efficient than the 30 year-old unit it replaced, which saves us money on power.  Our family is extremely grateful to the Nevada State Contractors Board, the SNARSCA group and YES! Air Conditioning and Plumbing for this tremendous help at this time,” said Mark Whitaker.

Although Whitaker’s wife, Laurie, has a job, he is unemployed and their 18 month-old grandson, who lives with them, is being treated for leukemia. “Our entire company takes great pride in participating in community programs like Mission Cool Off.  We enjoy helping families in need throughout the Las Vegas Valley,” said Lance Fernandez, general manager of Yes! Air Conditioning & Plumbing.

Peter Tso, 62, of Las Vegas also received a new AC unit. His was donated and installed by Sahara Air Conditioning and Heating, Inc.   Tso suffers from kidney disease and undergoes dialysis treatment three times per week.  His unit stopped working last winter, and he couldn’t afford to replace it.

The final recipient of the 4th Annual Mission Cool Off program was 77-year-old Dorothy Hypes of Las Vegas. Sierra Air Conditioning, Inc., donated and installed Hypes’ new unit. Hypes is a widow living on a fixed income.  Her husband passed away five years ago from cancer.  She didn’t think she would be chosen for the program, but wanted to apply anyway.

The 4th Annual Mission Cool Off program was limited to the first 100 applications received between March 2-31, 2009.  Selections were made by Nevada State Contractors Board and SNARSCA representatives, based upon a family’s special circumstances or needs.    SNARSCA is a non-profit corporation committed to promoting and protecting the interests and welfare of the industry, its members and the public.

Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton Visits Nevada Cancer Institute

Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton visited Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI) on Monday, June 29 to learn more about the cancer treatment and research conducted at the state-of-the-art flagship facility. Cancer research, particularly breast and cervical, is one of Dalton’s main platforms through her reign as Miss USA.

During her visit, Dalton toured the facilities with Dr. Karen Milligan, assistant member, Breast Cancer Oncology Division, and director of The Survivorship Clinic at NVCI.  She visited the NVCI library, boutique, meditation and exercise rooms, exam rooms and the infusion suite.  In the infusion suite, Dalton met with patients undergoing chemotherapy and discussed their journey to recovery while posing for photos and offering her support.

Dalton took great interest in The Survivorship Clinic at NVCI, which is the first clinic of its kind in Nevada.  It focuses on quality of life issues such as the coordination of care, patient-provider communication, palliative care, pain management, and healthy and active lifestyles following a cancer diagnosis.

An interesting note – during her tour with Dr. Karen Milligan,   Miss USA discovered that she and the doctor are from the very same town in Wilmington in North Carolina and both attended college at Eastern Carolina University.

Dalton then toured Dr. Sheri Holmen’s research laboratory, learning the important role that research plays in the fight against cancer.  With NVCI being both a research and treatment facility, Holmen demonstrated the link between developing drugs that can then be quickly used as treatments by the Institute’s physicians.

Dalton first visited NVCI in April as one of nine contestants for the Miss USA crown for the Bottles of Hope patient support activity. Patients, their families and supporters spent time with several Miss USA contestants creating polymer-covered chemo bottles that held an inspirational message for newly diagnosed patients.
