Las Vegas Mourns the Death of Headliner Danny Gans

The Las Vegas community was shocked to hear that entertainer Danny Gans passed away in his Henderson home early Friday, May 1.  He was 52 years old. As of this writing, the cause of death is unknown. However, it is reported that when the police were called around 3:35 a.m. he was having trouble breathing.  By the time paramedics arrived Gans was not responding and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Danny Gans was a singer impressionist who gained fame as a Las Vegas headliner, first performing on the Las Vegas strip in 1996 at the Stratosphere.

Most recently he ended a successful 8 year gig at the Mirage, moving his act to the newly opened Encore, sister property of Wynn Las Vegas, where he opened in February of 2009. Known as the Man of Many Voices, Gans was named Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year for twelve consecutive years.

dannygans

More than an immensely talented, award winning entertainer who consistently sold out shows, Gans was known as a deeply religious man and humanitarian and was the host of various charity events including charity golf tournaments and the Danny Gans Champions Run for Life to benefit children’s charities. He also founded the Danny Gans Junior Golf Academy which introduced youngsters to the sport.  To show his appreciation to local residents, during his run at the Mirage he offered a special discounted ticket price for locals and donated the proceeds to charity. In February 2008, in support of Opportunity Village he donated money from one performance to the charity.

Sincere condolences go out to Danny Gan’s wife of 28 years, Julie, and their 3 children, Amy, Andrew and Emily.  His sudden and unexpected passing is a devastating loss to his family, friends and the entertainment world.

Peep Show Opens at Planet Hollywood

Peep Show, which recently debuted at the newly renamed Chi Showroom inside Planet Hollywood is a flashy, high powered production with a twist, the combination of Broadway theatre and topless burlesque with intertwining sequences loosely (and I do mean very loosely) based on nursery rhymes and fairy tales.

The show stars former “Scary” Spice Girl, Melanie Brown (Mel B. for short) and TV actress/Dancing With the Stars first season winner Kelly Monaco in a fantasy tale about female sexuality and empowerment.  The set up is simple. Kelly plays Bo Peep, a lonely, sexually frustrated young woman (of course, you have to suspend belief to think this hot femme would ever be in this predicament) who falls asleep while reading some Bedtime Stories and awakes in a dreamland where she meets Peep Diva (a strong voiced, smoldering Mel B. looking fit and fabulous in a main of black curls) who acts as mistress of ceremonies, guiding Bo on a naughty journey transforming her from a timid young woman to sexy confident siren with help of some famous storybook characters that she encounters such as Big Bad Wolf, Little Boy Blue, Goldie, Georgie Porgie, and others who offer a rather saucy side that you’ve never seen before.

What makes Peep Show stand out from most of the other topless shows is its production value that is both superb and stylish thanks to the collaboration of award winning director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell and production designer David Rockwell, who have worked together on several Broadway shows including Legally Blonde and Hairspray.  The two deliver the goods creating a visually dazzling show, and I don’t just mean in regards to the talented, beautiful cast.  The dancers are all excellent, naturally endowed (these days that is rare for most topless reviews), athletic and healthy looking, and were handpicked to complete the highly-skilled, voluptuous cast for a show that is unlike any other on The Strip.

Backed by a live band and dynamic singers including Josh Strickland, who starred in Disney’s Broadway version of Tarzan, the show features six original songs, with each number focusing on the art of tease.  One is more tantalizing and sexually provocative than the next incorporating skimp costumes and pastied breasts. A few even offer new takes on the tradition bathtub routine and a pole dance. So that ladies in the audiences aren’t left out in allowing their fantasies to run wild, male eye candy is provided by a hot, hunky guy in tight jeans who gets all wet, gives great rope (see it and you’ll know exactly what I mean) while dangling above and in a bathtub.

All in all, Peep Show is a girlie show, be it a gorgeously packaged, well executed one at that, and a notch above the rest in which everything about the show is arousing. Aimed at adult audiences, this entertaining, eye catching production offers the classier, perfect alternative to a strip club for bachelor parties and open minded adults of the opposite sex.
While Mel B. and Kelly Monaco presently co-star in the show, they aren’t permanent members of the cast. Sometime in the near future PEEPSHOW will feature alternating celebrity stars in order to keep the show sexy, fresh and alluring.

Trent Carlini Opens his show "Elvolution" at the Steve Wyrick Theatre
Elvis Presley tribute artist, Trent Carlini gained national recognition last year when he competed against other celebrity impersonators and tribute artists to win the title of “The Next Best Thing” on the TV reality show of the same name.    He wowed the judges as well as millions of viewers who voted for him. However, prior to his winning TV performance, Las Vegas audiences were familiar with Carlini as one of most popular and talented Elvis tribute artists ever to perform on the famous strip.

Just recently Carlini opened a brand new show at the Steve Wyrick Theatre at the Miracle Mile Shops inside Planet Hollywood that he has fittingly titled “Elvolution”. As a nostalgic, “elvolutionary” musical journey through the King’s career, Carlini performs more than 20 of Elvis’ greatest hits from his early rock and roll roots, through the Army and movie years, the famous ’68 comeback concert, and Las Vegas years of the 70’s.

In between costumes changes that reflect the different chapters of the King’s music and film career, video clips show Carlini as a youngster, in rehearsal with his band and explaining in a voiceover how “honored he is to be able to present the music, image and style of the man he admired and sharing the gift he has received”.

After opening up as a young, pompadour haired Elvis performing those early goodies “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Shake Rattle and Roll”, Carlini takes a moment offstage and returns in one of many costumes fitting to the applicable era.  Outfit changes include a G.I. army uniform, Hawaiian shirt and lei, black leather jumpsuit (he makes an entrance on a motorcycle) with Carlini closing the show wearing a white jumpsuit and black scarf  singing “In The Ghetto”, “Suspicious Minds” and “My Way” on a replica of the actual comeback stage.

During the show, female members of the audience react to Carlini’s performance by getting out of their seats and coming right up to the stage for a chance to touch him and get a kiss.

Of course, noone can replace the one and only King, but Carlini sure is an impressive lookalike and soundalike channeling Elvis’ irrepressible spirit complete with strong, sultry voice and sexy, gyrating pelvic moves.

What the show lacks is production value. Basically a one man show with a lighted curtain as backdrop, the focus is strictly on Carlini’s performance, and the live band and back up singers are heard but not seen until the finale. Having them on stage throughout the show would definitely create more excitement and raise the production value. As musicians who supply him with fantastic support, Carlini should at least take some time and introduce them, which he failed to do.

trent-carlini_145

Carlini’s show “Elvolution” is sure to attract Elvis fans and others who enjoy seeing talented tribute artists that are at the top of their game. Unfortunately, Elvis has left the building…for good. The legendary icon is dead and gone and nothing can bring him back.  But, there is no doubt that Trent Carlini, as the “Dream King”, certainly is “the next best thing”.
