SAHARA Las Vegas’ celebrated its 70th Anniversary on Friday, Oct. 7.  The event included a brief discussion by Dr. Michael Greenof the University of Nevada, Las Vegas about SAHARA’s origins on Oct. 7, 1952, and vibrant, seven-decade-long history as well as remarks by SAHARA Las Vegas President Paul Hobson.

The celebration concluded with a 70th anniversary cake presentation and champagne toast inside SAHARA’s AZILO Ultra Lounge before guests attended the Epicurean Charitable Foundation’s (ECF) MENUS fundraiser at SAHARA’s AZILO Ultra Pool. At that event, Alexis Meruelo, chief vision and purpose officer for Meruelo Gaming, SAHARA’s parent company, made a surprise $15,000 donation to the ECF, which provides scholarships for students to attend the University of Nevada Las Vegas’ hospitality school.

SAHARA Las Vegas’ anniversary celebration also marked the official debut of “70 Years of Extraordinary Images: SAHARA’s History in Photographs,” an exhibition spanning the resort’s history and noteworthy milestones from 1952 to the present day. The collection of iconic images sourced from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) Archive includes vintage images of dazzling entertainers and global superstars, including Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra, among many other notable guests at SAHARA.

Over its 70-year history, the world-renowned resort and casino has also hosted other prominent entertainers, celebrities and world leaders, including The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, Eleanor Roosevelt, Johnny Carson, Judy Garland, Liberace, Clint Eastwood, Cher, Nancy Wilson, Bon Jovi and more. The property’s interior and exterior were also featured in 1960’s “Ocean’s Eleven.”

Since developer Milton Prell opened the property on Oct. 7, 1952, SAHARA has undergone several expansions and transformations. The property’s first expansion to add additional hotel rooms took place in 1954 and, in the years following, SAHARA has continued to add new facets to the hotel. Two new hotel towers were built in 1960 and 1963, and a third tower was added in 1988.

In 2011, the property underwent a redevelopment as SLS Las Vegas before reopening in 2014. In 2017, Alex Meruelo and his company, Meruelo Gaming, announced the purchase of the SLS Las Vegas and its rebranding to SAHARA Las Vegas.

Since its grand reopening in 2019, SAHARA Las Vegas has been completely reimagined thanks to a $200 million renovation which incorporates extraordinarily elegant design elements conceived by Nancy Paolino of Las Vegas-based Innovativo Design.  The all-new SAHARA includes several eateries, including Noodle Den and Chickie’s & Pete’s, as well as the AZILO Ultra Pool and Ultra Lounge, a purpose-built theater for the popular MAGIC MIKE LIVE production, a spectacular porte-cochere fronting the Las Vegas Strip and James Beard Award-winning Chef Shawn McClain’s Balla Italian Soul.

Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens Unveils Fall Masterpiece with “Artfully Autumn” Display

Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens  has unveiled its latest seasonal display called  'Artfully Autumn” that welcomes guests as they embark on a feast for the senses with dramatic sculptural pieces and an abundance of fall floral, foliage and pumpkins, all while being captivated by a new custom fragrance.

Open through November 12, this season’s masterpiece was envisioned by designer Ed Libby and Bellagio’s Horticulture team. The experience pays homage to modern architecture and artists such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Christo and Jeanne-Claude and Louis Comfort Tiffany, incorporating reverence to their designs in unexpected and imaginative ways.

Throughout the Conservatory journey, guests will enjoy botanical works of art nestled within a palette of rich golden hues and crisp oranges and reds as a new festive fall “cornucopia” scent fills the air with the aroma of cranberry and orange mixed with rich cinnamon, setting the mood for the season.

Upon entering the Conservatory, guests are welcomed by a spectacular waterfall sculpture towering above the West Bed. The sculpture is a reinterpreted homage to the famed Rain Vortex at Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore, the world’s tallest indoor waterfall.  To create the infinity waterfall basin, Bellagio engineers removed a portion of the Conservatory subfloor below, a first in the resort’s 24-year history.

In the North Bed, guests will encounter a series of gilded archways complemented by metallic copper-hued bonsai trees accented with colorful floral bases. Each tree, which is said to bring harmony and good luck, creates a couture approach to the ancient meditative practice of shaping nature into living works of art. State-of-the-art lighting accentuates the bonsai sculptures and gilded components, providing a warm glow for all who visit. Nearby LED screens bring the autumnal display to life with artfully interpreted scenes of falling leaves, cascading waterfalls and other moving botanical elements.

Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1935 architectural masterpiece, Fallingwater, the reimagined design is the centerpiece of the South Bed and embraces the harmonious fusion of art and nature through architecture. To the right of the sculpture are two giant acorn topiaries, created with 32,000 orange carnations, representing the cycle and vitality of life. Flying high above the display are five flickering dragonflies, a symbol of wisdom, transformation and adaptability with wings inspired by glass work from Louis Comfort Tiffany.

The East Bed is inspired by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 2005 New York City popular orange fabric art installation, The Gates. Four 20-foot-tall, gilded archways adorned with vibrant multicolored flowers are shaded above by a giant oak tree branch with flickering acorns and giant hand-made orange leaves. Within each arch, a sheer descent of water creates a window for an artistic view of the Conservatory

“’Artfully Autumn’ is an artistic representation of fall, inspired by art and architecture that reimagines seasonal designs in elegant and creative ways,” said Libby. “It’s been my dream to create a display that is not only visually appealing, but also speaks to works of art that touch the soul. This display achieves all this and more.”

Admission toThe Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is FREE and open to the public, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE) Reunites Baking Industry in Las Vegas

The International Baking Industry Exposition, which took place in Las Vegas, Nevada from September 17 through September 21, welcomed the industry after a three-year hiatus from events. Close to 20,000 professionals registered for the expo, ready to take their baking businesses to the next level after pandemic-induced challenges filled much of the gap in the show’s three-year cycle. Over the four-day expo, attendees flooded the halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center, looking for the latest equipment, ingredient and supply solutions from more than 800 industry suppliers. While exhibitor personnel and non-exhibiting supplier guests fell just shy of pre-pandemic numbers, baker attendee participation was an astounding 25% ahead, further cementing the perception from exhibitors that high-quality bakers—with intent to buy—were walking the show floor.

A common theme expressed by exhibitors was the number of international buyers who attended the Las Vegas event. Many exhibitors stated that this was the best IBIE in history for connecting with buyers from outside the United States—buyers that many exhibitors would not have been able to reach on their own. Despite COVID-related travel challenges, the number of international bakers increased 34% over 2019, hailing from more than 105 countries and making up more than 27% percent of baker attendance, with the largest participation from Brazil, Canada, Colombia, and El Salvador—and a record-setting delegation from Mexico.

“IBIE 2022 has exceeded all expectations,” said Dennis Gunnel, IBIE chairman. “The Baking Expo has a long history of championing innovation aimed at the changing needs of our bakers—from the advancements on the show floor and IBIEducate presentations to the high-quality buyers walking the aisles. During a time when trade events are getting a fraction of their pre-pandemic participation, our industry showed up.”
