On Tuesday, August 2, The National Atomic Testing Museum (NATM) debuted  a brand-new joint exhibit created in partnership with the United States Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) titled “Beyond the Manhattan Project: Cleaning up the Legacy of America’s Nuclear Defense and Research Missions.” The exhibit details the critical work EM does to clean up various sites impacted by five decades of nuclear weapons production and government-sponsored nuclear energy research.

In addition to showcasing how the cleanup of contaminated nuclear weapons manufacturing and testing sites is completed, the new exhibit will also increase public awareness of how EM cooperates with local communities to ensure the health and safety of the public and workforce in the United States.

RMS Titanic's wreck site is located 963 miles northeast of New York and 453 miles southeast of the Newfoundland coastline. Originally failing to recover the 17-ton, 25-feet wide and 13-feet high starboard side of the hull during the 1996 expedition, the RMS Titanic, Inc. recovery team returned and successfully recovered the side of the ship during the fifth expedition in 1998. A 15-ton portion of the hull can be found inside the exhibition at Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, famously named “Big Piece,” and a 2-ton portion, commonly referred to as “Little Piece,” can be found inside the Orlando exhibition.

E/M GROUP honored the 24th anniversary of the “Big Piece” recovery and paid tribute to the founder of RMS Titanic, Inc., George Harmon Tulloch, with the unveiling of commemorative plaques at the Las Vegas and Orlando exhibitions. Tulloch was a Titanic explorer who co-led five expeditions to the wreck site beneath the ocean floor of the Atlantic, salvaging artifacts from the debris field of the wreck site of the famed ocean liner following the tragic sinking on April 15, 1912. His leadership and vision for respectfully preserving Titanic left an indelible mark shaping and guiding E/M Group and its affiliate RMS Titanic, Inc.’s goals which continue to inspire a vision for the future of  Titanic.  TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition at Luxor Hotel and Casino is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the last admission at 7 p.m.
