Aid for AIDS of Nevada Celebrates 32nd Annual Black & White Party at DAYLIGHT Beach Club

The Las Vegas community came dressed for a cause and ready to party on Saturday, Sept. 8 for Aid for AIDS of Nevada's (AFAN) 32nd annual Black & White Party held at DAYLIGHT Beach Club inside Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. Proceeds from the night went directly to benefit AFAN's programs, including on-site HIV testing, nutritional services, medical transportation, education and prevention, housing programs, and mental health services.

Marco and Joanna from Sunny 106.5 kicked off the evening by introducing performances from East Side Riot and Jacinthe Morearty.  Hosts Miss Behave and Andrew Ryan then entertained the crowd and introduced performances from top Strip headliners, including Aussie Heat, Vegas! The Show, Jennifer Romas, Tenors of Rock, Murray The Magician, Kyle Khou from "American Idol", Adore Delano from "RuPaul's Drag Race" and Magician David Goldrake. In between performances, DJ Axis kept party goers dancing with a live set.

Themed "Escape to Paradise," attendees came dressed for the biggest 80s throwback event of the year wearing iconic 80s clothing, balloon costumes, over-the-top gowns, stilts, and barely-there fashions. DAYLIGHT Beach Club was transformed with giant boomboxes, life size cassette tapes and neon lights, and partygoers were even able to go for a swim alongside black and white mermaids. Attendees were treated to samples from Brio Tuscan Grille, House of Blues, Hamburger Mary's, Slice of Vegas, Libertine Social, Hussong's Cantina, Four Seasons, and Tito's Handmade Vodka.

AFAN's Executive Director Antioco Carrillo and Board President Scott Washburn honored individuals for their outstanding efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS on stage including Gary Costa, Mia Stein, Tammy Unglesbee, Thomas Benko, Doug May, Felipe Crook, Kristopher Minnich, Gary Brewer, Lester and Dustin Rossi Boudreaux Thibodeaux, Noel Dahl, Sharon Hearne, Chris Scavo, and Bri Kouretas. These individuals had the privilege of wearing red in addition to black and white to symbolize their contributions to AFAN.

"We thank everyone in the community who helped us with this event, especially the performers and volunteers who are giving their time tonight," said Carrillo. "We wouldn't be able to have this party without you. With the money raised and your continued support, our team will continue to provide lifesaving resources for those living with HIV/AIDS in Southern Nevada until a cure is found."

Imagine Dragons' Non Profit Organization Raises Record Amount at 5th Annual Rise Up Gala to Fight Pediatric Cancer

On September 14, in an extraordinary, one-night-only experience, the 5th Annual Rise Up Gala raised a record $2.1 million for The Tyler Robinson Foundation (TRF), the Imagine Dragons’ nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting families facing a pediatric cancer diagnosis.

More than 800 guests attended the star-studded, sold-out event held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas which featured a performance by the GRAMMY Award-winning, multiplatinum-selling band, as well as appearances by special guests including master of ceremonies Joel McHale, Criss Angel, Clayne Crawford, “Impractical Jokers” stars The Tenderloins, Missi Pyle and TRF Community Impact Award honorees the NHL Western Division champions, the Vegas Golden Knights including Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Cody Eakin, Deryk Engelland, Erik Haula, Nick Holden, Brad Hunt, William Karlsson, Brayden McNabb, Colin Miller, Tomas Nosek, Nate Schmidt, Reilly Smith, Tomas Tatar and Alex Tuch.

TRF supporters and Imagine Dragons fans unable to attend the event once again had an opportunity to join the gala’s festivities from home, catching a livestream of the band’s special acoustic set as well as a livestream of the red carpet arrivals hosted by Frankie Grande. Online viewers generously contributed to TRF’s mission, raising an additional $5,000 in support of TRF families.

Additionally, the Rise Up Gala honored those who have made notable contributions to TRF through direct personal efforts, philanthropic support, or by raising public awareness for pediatric cancer. This year’s honorees included the Vegas Golden Knights, corporate partner Live Nation, TRF Youth Ambassador of the Year 17-year old singer/songwriter Tris Weeks and the Legacy Award honoree Jeff Schwartz.

TRF has raised more than $7.5 million to support families battling childhood cancer by providing grants to offset the many unseen costs associated with treatment. More than 500 families have benefited from TRF support. The Foundation continues to grow its efforts for families through a number of awareness and fundraising initiatives.

Candlelighters Hold Annual Superhero 5K In Support of Children Battling Cancer

Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada held its 29th Annual Superhero 5K with Chet Buchanan at Mountain’s Edge Exploration Peak Park on Saturday, September 15. Runners, walkers and community partners sported superhero capes in support of children battling cancer as they competed in the 5K Superhero Run and the Superhero one-mile.

Following the race, attendees enjoyed food and refreshments and a kid’s zone with bounce houses and an obstacle course, as well as the newly added Beer Garden hosted by Ellis Island. Proceeds from the run will go toward supporting Candlelighters’ mission to provide emotional, financial and quality of life services to local children and their families battling a childhood cancer diagnosis.

The race is just one of many community events Candlelighters hosts during the organization’s annual shineGOLD campaign to generate awareness and community support in honor of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Candlelighters, Southern Nevada’s first and oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local pediatric cancer patients, is commemorating its 40th year of service to the community. This year also marks the third year of the organization’s shineGOLD campaign which is designed to help spread awareness about the devastating impact childhood cancer has on families and encourage the community to offer support and get involved.

ON YOUR FEET! Cast Donates $25,000 to Keep Memory Alive on Behalf of Emilio & Gloria Estefan

Thursday evening, Sept. 6, Jason Martinez, who portrays Gloria’s father in ON YOUR FEET!, along with the full cast, presented Mr. Larry Ruvo with a $25,000 donation to Keep Memory Alive in support of the Major José M. Fajardo Patient Services Program. The check was presented on behalf of Gloria & Emilio Estefan who started the Major José M. Fajardo Patient Services Program in honor of Gloria’s father José Fajardo who died of multiple sclerosis.

The donation will benefit Keep Memory Alive, whose mission is to provide enhanced treatment and ultimately cures for patients and their families suffering from neurocognitive disorders. Keep Memory Alive raises awareness and funds in support of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, and by supporting the organization and its fight against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, ALS and memory disorders of all kinds, we can ensure progress towards better treatments and ultimately cures will occur in Las Vegas.

Magician Mat Franco visited The Animal Foundation on Tuesday, Sept. 11, when he presented the state’s largest open-admission animal shelter with much-needed animal care supplies and Petco gift cards to care for the nearly 25,000 animals it saves annually. 

2018 marks the third year in a row that Mat has teamed up with SUNY 106.5 and Petco to collect items from The Animal Foundation’s wish list in celebration of the third anniversary of his award-winning show, MAT FRANCO – MAGIC REINVENTED NIGHTLY. During the month-long pet supply drive, visitors to any Las Vegas-area Petco location that purchased a minimum of $10 worth of items from the organization’s wish list, or a gift card of equivalent value, received one complimentary ticket voucher to see MAT FRANCO – MAGIC REINVENTED NIGHTLY in the Mat Franco Theater at The LINQ Hotel & Casino.

Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas continued its 15th annual OKTOBERFEST celebration Saturday night, September 15, with talented singer, showman, songwriter and musician FRANKIE MORENO who tapped a keg of Las Vegas’ only authentic Oktoberfestbier and treated the crowd to an impromptu performance. The 15th annual Oktoberfest celebration runs through October 31 and features Oktoberfestbier stein-holding contests, live entertainment, bar games, prizes and celebrity keg tappings every weekend. The cast of “FANTASY” will make an Oktoberfest appearance on Friday, Sept. 21, while stars of Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s show “Raiding the Rock Vault” will perform the ceremonial keg tapping duties on Saturday, Sept. 22.

The Universal Domino League, the first official gaming association dedicated solely to the game of dominoes, has announced CASINO DOMINOS made its world debut in Downtown Las Vegas beginning Tuesday, Sept. 18. The state-of-the-art new domino casino game will be featured on table games at the historic PLAZA HOTEL & CASINO LAS VEGAS with additional formats, including slot machines and digital applications, coming soon.The first of its kind, Casino Dominoes is a fast-paced, easy-to-learn card game, similar to three-card poker or blackjack. Inspired by the classic game of dominoes, Casino Dominoes utilizes up to six players at once. Players are dealt three cards and one connector card each, with the goal of matching their domino cards to the connector card, using standard domino rules. Scoring is calculated in multiples of five. The more points collected, the higher the payout. Players can win up to 500 to 1 on a wager, with the option of placing doubles side bets.

America’s Got Talent named close-up magician SHIN LIM the winner of the sensational Season 13 on September 19. Shin Lim will headline an exclusive engagement of AMERICAS GOT TALENT LIVE, a stage show version of the NBC #1 rated television show of the summer, in Las Vegas Nov. 2 – 4 in the Paris Theater at Paris Las Vegas. The starring role in America’s Got Talent Live is in addition to the million-dollar prize Shin Lim won during the exciting live Season 13 finale.  Shin Lim will headline the Las Vegas stage with guest Season 13 finalists, singer Courtney Hadwin, electric violinist Brian King Joseph, trapeze artists Duo Transcend and comedians Samuel J. Comroe and Vicki Barbolak.The four show dates including a special Sunday matinee performance, are: Nov. 2, 3; 7:30 p.m.Nov. 4; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets will go on sale to the public Friday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. PST. Tickets range in price from $55 to $185, plus additional taxes and fees.

On Thursday, September 20, the American Gaming Association announced the GAMING HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2018: Peter M. Carlino, a prominent leader in casino operations and real estate; Richard Haddrill, a gaming innovator and local philanthropist; Philip P. Hannifin, an industry pioneer who played a major role driving out organized crime and bringing in corporate investment to Nevada; and Steven Perskie, a pioneer for growing legalized gaming outside of Nevada. Since its formation in 1989, the Gaming Hall of Fame has recognized leaders who have distinguished themselves through significant contributions to gaming. An invitation-only ceremony honoring the inductees will take place during the Chairman’s Reception at Global Gaming Expo (G2E), sponsored by AGA and the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM).

The COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS will host an exhibition of mixed media textile artwork by El Salvador native artist, designer, and fervent admirer of popular culture and ancient folklore, LEILA HERNANDEZ, beginning Friday, September 21, 2018 and will run through Saturday, November 3, 2018 in the Fine Arts Gallery, room H101, at CSN’s North Las Vegas campus. Hernández’s exhibition, titled Leila Hernández: La Visa Negra”, is a collection of narratives dealing with border issues and the effects of immigration in refugees living and working in the United States. The CSN Fine Arts Gallery is FREE and open to the public. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The Fine Arts Gallery is located at the half circle drive near CSN’s main entrance, on the North Las Vegas campus at 3200 E. Cheyenne Avenue, one-mile East of I-15 North.


The public is invited to a three-day celebration marking the official grand opening of MAGICAL MEMORIES DIMENSIONS at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace September 21 - 23. Complementing the works of nearby flagship gallery Magical Memories featuring Disney Fine Art, Magical Memories Dimensions showcases original 3D works by a variety of artists. For its multi-day grand opening, the visual art venue presents a public celebration featuring guest artists, live art demonstrations, free drawing classes, giveaways and more. Throughout the course of the weekend, a portion of sales will benefit The Animal Foundation.

On Saturday, Sept 22, learn to draw cartoon characters with John Ramirez and enjoy live paintings and signings with Paige O’Hara, Cris Woloszak and Manuel Hernandez. Contemporary local artist JAMES STANFORD presents “SHIMMERING ZEN”, a new exhibition featuring photomontages of vintage Las Vegas landmarks and the city’s famed neon signs, Friday, Sept. 21 through Saturday, Dec. 8 in The Studio at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. The exhibit is FREE and open to the public. A welcoming reception with Stanford will be 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27.

The 10th ANNUAL ST. BALDRICK'S DAY HEAD SHAVING EVENT at New York New York Hotel & Casino kicks off early this year on Friday, Sept. 21. From 4-8 p.m., The Strip’s flagship fundraising event for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which raised more than $600,000 last year, will welcome new and returning teams for early registration during an evening of live entertainment and games on the Brooklyn Bridge, drink specials at Nine Fine Irishmen, and more.  Putting the fun in fundraising, teams and individuals ready to jumpstart the fundraising season can compete head to head in live games and activities on the Brooklyn Bridge stage with a $5 donation buy-in for a chance to win a wristband to the Fall Brew Celebration at The Park, Sept. 22. EASTER SEALS NEVADA’s Board of Directors has appointed TINA JEEVES as acting CEO, replacing former president and CEO Brian Patchett. Jeeves, who served as the organization’s senior Vice President of Programs for the last 28 years, is a native to Las Vegas and began her non-profit tenure volunteering in high school after a close relative became disabled and prompted her to want to help others. Jeeves joined Easterseals Nevada in 1989, then Nevada Association for the Handicapped, and brings her knowledge of all aspects of the agency to her role as acting CEO.This fall, Easterseals Nevada will introduce new initiatives to its robust programming including CreARTivity, which offers children and families a CreARTivity session with Positively Kids beginning Sept. 28, 2018. Additionally, Easterseals Nevada is set to host its first-ever Winter Overnight Camp at Camp Potosi, Nov. 18-20, following the smashing success of the organization’s summer camp. Also addressing the community’s social service gaps, Easterseals Nevada recognized the need for additional Adult Day Services for adults with significant disabilities throughout the valley and earlier this year expanded programming to North Las Vegas, offering services such as rehabilitation skills, daily living training and everyday socialization.

On opening night of his limited three-week engagement at the iconic Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesars, Palace Paul Shaffer and his talented full band, The Shāf-Shifters were joined on stage by television icon David Letterman.For 33 years, Shaffer served as Letterman's musical director and sidekick. Letterman joined his life-long friend on stage to reminisce with anecdotes and stories from decades of working with the biggest names in music, film and television.
