Luminaries Honored at 15th Annual UNLV Hall of Fame Awards
The 15th Annual UNLV College of Fine Arts Hall of Fame awards took place on Tuesday evening, April 3 in the UNLV Student Union Ballroom. The gala event, which honors those past and present residents of Nevada who have made a significant impact in the areas of visual arts, performing arts and/or architecture, included a reception, dinner and ceremony.
This year's list of inductees and award recipients were architect and urban planner Denise Scott Brown, American glass sculptor Dale Chihuly and his wife Leslie Jackson Chihuly, president of Chihuly Studio; Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté; Myron Martin; president and CEO of the Smith Center; and Claudette Robinson, one of the original members of The Miracles, whose lead singer/frontman was her former husband, Smokey Robinson. They join many luminaries of the stage and screen, artists and architects - people who worked tirelessly to raise the level of arts around the world.

Also recognized were Broadcaster and educator Dr. Harvey Allen Godorov and arts administrator William Lowman, who were presented with the Dean Koep Medal, and Fine Arts Alumnus of the Year was artist and educator Tim Bavington.
Todd Fisher, whose late mother, beloved legendary actress/singer/dancer Debbie Reynolds was honored as the Dean's Medal recipient last year, came on stage with his wife Catherine Hicks to announce the Debbie Reynolds Endowment for the Arts and a $1 million pledge to UNLV. Todd stated, “My mother was given a scholarship (when she was young) back in Burbank to the studio to be trained. And like my mother, this (pledge) is for the future stars.”

With a rich history in the performing arts business, including serving as the director of UNLV's Performing Arts Center, Pres./CEO of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Myron Martin has brought the world's most celebrated entertainers to Las Vegas, including first run touring attractions and internationally acclaimed performers in music, theater and dance. Under Myron's leadership and keeper of the vision, The Smith Center has been praised for “representing Las Vegas' artistic coming of age, by the Associated Press, and called a cultural oasis by the L.A. Times. In its first five years, the Smith Center has welcomed more than 2 million guests. In accepting his award, Myron was proud to say, “The Smith Center has made the list of top 10 performing art centers in the world.”

Among his many achievements, visionary leader William Lowman helped found the Las Vegas Symphony, consulted for many small arts organizations and moved into the arts administration as the Founder and Director of The Nevada School of the Arts. - a summer music camp and year round community school. “It feels like a million bucks to be honored in my hometown,” Lowman said when presented with the award.

Born and raised in Philadelphia Dr. Harvey Allen Godorov, has a long and distinguished career in arts and education. Godorov was a full time professor at UNLV teaching courses in English, speech, journalism, theater, acting and broadcasting for 31 years. He developed programs in TV and radio and started the broadcasting and journalism internships, produced and hosted a weekly Public Service Radio Show for the college, in addition to creating PSAs for the school. In 1979, Godorov received the doctorate in secondary education from UNLV and in the mid 1980s, he switched to teaching night classes at CCSN so he could host an all night radio talk show on KDWN for a number of years. In 2007 Gidorov was entered in the U.S. Congessional Record and in 2008 he was elected to the Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

London born, current Las Vegas resident, acclaimed artist, Tim Bavington is best known for translating music to canvas by assigning sounds to corresponding colors and compositions. In addition to paintings, Bavington has explored large scale sculptures. He created a major commission titled, “Pipe Dream” , which is on display at Symphony Park at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Las Vegas.

Bold visionary, Guy Liberte, the creator/founder of Cirque du Soleil, was the first to orchestrate the marriage of cultures and artistic and acrobatic disciplines that is the hallmark of Cirque productions. He opened his first Las Vegas production, Mystere in 1993 and changed the face of entertainment on the strip. In October 2007 he entered into another lifetime commitment by creating the One Drop Foundation to help fight poverty by providing sustainable access to water for communities all over the world. In September of 2009, Liberte also became the first Canadian private space explorer. Under the theme Moving Stars and Earth for Water, his mission was to raise awareness on water issues facing humankind on planet earth through a special 120minute webcast program featuring various artistic performances unfolding in 14 cities on five continents including the International Space Station. Among his many awards and recognitions, Time Magazine named him one of the most influential people in the world, honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and most recently included in Forbes 100th anniversary issue as one of the World's Greatest Business Minds.

Claudette Robinson, an original member of The Miracles, was the first female artist signed to Tamla/Motown label. The Miracles record “Shop Around” became Motown's first million record seller which prompted Motown founder Berry Gordy to proclaim Robinson as the “First Lady of Motown”. With a career that spanned 5 decades, selling more than 60 million records, the Miracles were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and in 2012 they were retroactively inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Additional accolades include The Miracles being named #32 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of “the 100 greatest Rock and Roll artists of all time and among Billboard magazine's “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. In 2017 Robinson presented The Miracles Exhibit at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, showcasing memorabilia from her private collection.

Architect, planner, designer and educator Denise Scott Brown, was honored for her many projects and ideas that have influenced designers and thinkers worldwide. As an advocate for women in architecture she has spoken out about discrimination within her profession. With her contribution to the architectural community, she helped transform a “cowboy” city into the entertainment capital of the world and her insights int the city still resonates as an inspiration to many. Although she was in Philadelphia and unable to accept the award in person, she appeared on video saying that she was honored to receive the award and hoped that students are given a framework to explore new possibilities.

Renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly is recognized as leading the avante garde in the development of glass as a fine art. His work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide and his colorful and beautiful glass ceiling work is viewed by locals and visitors in the lobby of the Bellagio in Las Vegas. He has also been the recipient of many awards including two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and 12 honorary doctorates.

Leslie Jackson Chihuly's primary role is to ensure ongoing organizational strength to assist her husband Dale in realizing his vision, encompassing all aspects of his art, from unique large scale commissions to museum exhibitions, individual artworks and editions. She and her husband are involved with numerous non profit and philanthropic organizations, both locally and nationally with a focus on health, education, music and the arts. Together they founded the Dale and Leslie Chihuly Foundation to inspire and educate the public regarding all forms of art and to provide support to artists and arts organizations. In 2011 she was awarded the “Woman of Influence” Award by the Puget Sound Business Journal and in 2015 was presented the “Woman of Valor” award for her dedication to the arts community in the state of Washington.
Each of the inductees have made Nevada richer for their cultural contributions, are an inspiration to students, and help ensure that UNLV remains one of the nation's top fine arts colleges.
Proceeds from this event will benefit the UNLV College of Fine Arts students.

Vince and Natalee Upperman, along with partner Justin Blum, welcomed friends, family, and special guests for a sneak peek inside the casual dining concept before it opened to the public on Saturday, March 31.
Two-time UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir and two-time Impact champion professional wrestler Austin Aries made an appearance along with City of Henderson Councilwoman Gerri Schroder to commemorate the new restaurant and its role in making Las Vegas a healthier place.
"The Mayor and City Council congratulate Portion Control on the grand opening of your new Henderson restaurant," said Schroder. "We recognize your goal to provide great-tasting, high-quality meals to help aid in people's everyday healthy lifestyle or fitness goals."
"We're so excited to bring our brand of health food with fresh quality ingredients to Henderson," said Executive Chef Vince Upperman. "We look forward to serving each and every one of you."

Guests celebrated with a champagne toast and enjoyed passed samplings of signature Portion Control dishes including ahi bowls, salmon plate, shrimp tostada, chicken satays, oatmeal-crusted buffalo chicken tenders, turkey burgers with spinach and cranberry aioli, and fresh fruit and green smoothies.

THE TYLER ROBINSON FOUNDATION (TRF), the nonprofit organization of the GRAMMY Award-winning band Imagine Dragons, teamed up with Mondays Dark on Monday, April 2 at The Space to raise funds for families facing pediatric cancer diagnoses. Local performers from the Las Vegas community gathered together for a special night of music, entertainment and charity. Hosted by Mark Shunock, the evening was filled with laughs and entertainment as $10,000 was raised in 90 minutes to support the TRF mission. With the theme of “1977,” entertainers from across Las Vegas performed songs and vignettes from that year. Performers from the evening included Valerie Witherspoon Knecht, Bucky Heard, Tenors of Rock, Jolana Sampson-Adamson, Travis Cloer, Denita Ashbury, Andrew Freeman, Crystal Robinson, Tape Face, Jassen Allen and John DiDomenico.

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, DISCOVERY CHILDREN’S MUSEUM launched a special exhibit, the SENSORY TUNNEL EXPERIENCE by Neuro-fit Systems, open at the museum now through April 30. The 10-foot tunnel is designed to light up the senses with a barrage of visual, auditory and proprioceptive input. The walk is meant to illustrate the gifts and challenges experienced by those on the autism spectrum. Museum visitors can find the sensory tunnel within the Solve It! Exhibit on the third floor. PARK ON FREMONT located at 506 Fremont St. in the Fremont East Entertainment District, will host a ‘NAME GAME’ PROMOTION every Tuesday night from 7 to 9 p.m., starting on April 10. Each week, Park on Fremont will pick three to five names and post the announcement on social media channels. Join Museum Paleontologist Josh Bonde at the NEW Tule Springs State Park. Meet at the Shadow Ridge High School Parking Lot for a pedestrian tour. Pack plenty of water and a snack. The few mile round trip hike (depending on group interest) will include an overview of the interesting geology of the area and then a visit to some historical dig sites from the 1960's where Radiocarbon dating came of age. Also see some fossils on the ground. It is important to note that collecting fossils on State or Federal Land is illegal without a permit from the relevant land management agency. Come for a hike, learn about our past, and maybe find a treasure for our future. Wear clothes that can get dirty!

DRYBAR, the country’s premier blowout bar, will open its third location in Las Vegas on April 20.The newest addition is located on the first floor of Fashion Show, just steps from Las Vegas Boulevard between the Plaza entrance and Neiman Marcus. The third Las Vegas location joins existing shops at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, which opened December 2017, and The Miracle Mile Shops, which debuted July 2016. In honor the month of awareness and giving, autism awareness supporters are encouraged to grab friends, family, and sneakers for GRANT A GIFT AUTISM FOUNDATION'S 9th ANNUAL 5K RACE FOR HOPE AND FUN WALK on Saturday, April 28 at “The Green” at Town Square. Sponsored by Subway, this annual day of fun, fitness, and fundraising ends April’s National Autism Awareness Month and supports programming and treatment through Grant A Gift and the UNLV School of Medicine Ackerman Autism Center. Registration begins at 7 a.m., with the runs and walk beginning at 8 a.m., and morning of family-friendly fun continues until noon with music, raffles, and entertainment.
This day also provides families a valuable resource fair from 7 a.m. – noon, empowering families in Las Vegas to learn about new and exciting community programs, treatment options, and support as they live with an autism diagnosis. To commemorate what would have been the late composer, conductor and educator, Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday, THE COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA (CSN) and PM CSN DANCE presents “DEAR LENNY” SPRING DANCE CONCERT, Friday April 27 at 7:00 PM and Saturday April 28 at 2:00 pm. inside the Nicholas J. Horn Theatre located at 3200 E. Cheyenne on the North Las Vegas Campus. In addition to the Bernstein tribute, choreographer Leslie Kremer Roth premieres much anticipated new choreography. With an original viola composition written specifically for her to choreograph by her son, Tobias Roth, Leslie Kremer Roth partners with long-time colleague and dear friend Noel Brown, to give movement to their varied interpretations of “Home.”Completing the program is the promising new work of CSN Dance Certificate candidate, Kaylee Hannig. “Crossing Paths,” explores the relationship of interaction and energy between the dancers. When creating the movement Kaylee was inspired by connections between individuals, and how others can positively affect one’s life. Tickets are $8 General Admission, $5 for students and seniors.
CSN Fine Arts Music Program presents an AFTERNOON OF CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY JAZZ SELECTIONS performed by CSN’s JAZZ GROUP. The concert will feature CSN’s popular musical ensemble, The Jazz Singers, Jazz Combo and their special guest artists, the jazz vocal group, JAZMIN. The concert will take place on Sunday, April 29 at 2:00 p.m. in the Jay Morrison Recital Hall at the North Las Vegas campus. “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Erika Jayne celebrated the release of her book Pretty Mess at Beauty & Essex followed by a night of partying at Marquee Nightclub at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Joining the New York Times best-selling author in Beauty’s private dining room were eight friends including Creative Director Mikey Minden. Two showgirls surprised Jayne at her table with a congratulatory cake donning an image of her book cover. Continuing the celebrations, the group headed to the nightclub after dinner where Marquee staff surprised her with a bottle presentation as her book cover appeared on the LED screen and read, “Congratulations Erika”.
