Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens Unveils New Dazzling Autumn Display

Embracing the vibrant sights of the season, Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens has unveiled its new autumn display, open through November 25, inviting guests to wander through the enchanting landscapes featuring exotic peacocks and mystical creatures.

The Conservatory’s exhibit, envisioned by renowned designer Ed Libby and the Bellagio Horticulture team, encompasses the essence of fall with thousands of flowers rich in hues of umber, sienna and amber. The dazzling display includes subtle nods to Libby’s travels to India, seen prominently in the use of stunning, flower-encrusted peacocks. Symbolizing strength, beauty and renewal, male peacocks molt their tails at the end of each summer, similar to the way trees lose their leaves in autumn each year.

The journey begins in the East Garden as guests, surrounded by magnificent vegetation, walk through a 25-foot circular dome draped in gold and burgundy vines, decorative tassels and elaborate yellow leaves. Four ornate chandeliers, embellished with crystals and rust-colored foliage, illuminate a soft glow over the pathway, guiding visitors to the centerpiece of the harvest season display.

Capturing attention as guests walk through the entryway, are two striking 19-foot peacocks rest among two 24-foot massive trees within the West Garden. Consisting of over 14,000 chestnut, marigold and blue-colored preserved roses, the exotic birds’ 24-foot-long tails cascade around a waterfall nestled between the birds as a striking array of translucent leaves float high above.

In addition to the stunning new additions, several classic pieces return to the installation. In the South Garden, a 28-foot enchanted talking tree and three lively scarecrows welcome guests to the Conservatory. Steps away in the North Garden, three mythical creatures beckon guests closer to the garden, featuring a fountain overtaken by fog and surrounded by two topiary acorns made from 1,700 flowers.

Bellagio’s Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is FREE to the public and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Former NBA player Jerome “Junkyard Dog” Williams teams up with Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities For Specialized Clinic

The Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities at Touro University Nevada teamed up with former NBA player Jerome “Junkyard Dog” Williams on Sunday, Sept. 10, to host a free basketball clinic for local children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities. Many children with developmental disabilities have never had the opportunity to participate in team sports so this free clinic provided a safe and fun environment for them to learn educational tools like teamwork while developing core basketball skills.

Split into two sessions during the day, Williams and his team worked alongside Touro University Nevada student volunteers, and clinicians to teach attendees a variety of basketball drills, tactics and teamwork fundamentals. All children participating in the clinic received lunch, a t-shirt, mini basketball and a backpack filled with healthy snacks and other items.

The Touro Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities opened in 2008 as a state-of-the-art facility designed with the special needs of children with developmental disabilities in mind. The facility offers multiple evidence-based therapy services for children 18 months to 12 years; as well as diagnostic neuropsychological evaluations for children 18 months to 17 years.

Bartenders compete in Bartender Legends, Tequila Herradura's second national cocktail competition

On Monday, September 18, regional bartenders competed in the 2017 Bartender Legends at Omnia Nightclub, 3570 S Las Vegas Blvd, sponsored by Tequila Herradura.

Putting their mixing skills to the test, bartenders battled it out to create the best tequila cocktails in town. Using their original recipes that were named the best in Las Vegas, two winners, Tim Weigel and Nick Hipwell, were chosen to advance to the finals held at the historic Casa Herradura distillery in Mexico, where only one will win it all.

In addition to creating their own version of the original Horseshoe Margarita, participating bartenders were tasked with creating and presenting a twist on a classic cocktail made with Tequila Herradura. Bartender Legends, a national cocktail competition conducted by Liquor.com and the United States Bartenders’ Guild (USBG), allows bartenders across the country to showcase their creativity and expertise through uniquely-crafted tequila cocktails. Monday’s event saw nine entries from the area.

After beating out their competitors at the regional level, Weigel and Hipwell will move on to the next round of the competition, where they will compete with winning bartenders from the thirteen other participating markets. As finalists, Weigel and Hipwell will be given an all-expense paid trip to historic Casa Herradura, the last true tequila-producing hacienda on the planet, where they will compete in the national finale. Using the finest ingredients, including local fruit variants sourced directly from the grounds of the Casa, finalists will have the opportunity to create a truly original Tequila Herradura-inspired cocktail for the chance to win it all. During the trip, bartenders will also experience a VIP distillery tour, receive brand education and training, as well as explore popular and historic Mexico attractions.

“Everytime I go to the local authentic mexican grocery stores I always check out the unique candies they have,” Weigel said “these are not like American candy.”

Weigel’s winning tequila cocktail recipe was inspired by candy flavors that are salty and tangy, and lightly spicy. He chose the tamarind flavored candy (Zumbaleta) which sparked the inspiration. Hipwell’s winning tequila cocktail recipe was inspired by the combination of pear juice, rosemary infused honey and cinnamon.

“I was inspired to make this cocktail while exploring my local farmers market,” Hipwell said “seeing which fruits were beginning to come into season as summer is starting to end. With the taste of juicy pear still in my mouth I began brainstorming what tequila and spices would go best to make a great margarita.”
