Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art debuts “Picasso – Creatures and Creativity”

Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art (BGFA), which is recognized for bringing world-class art exhibitions to the Las Vegas Strip, debuted “Picasso – Creatures and Creativity” on July 3, featuring 43 works including 19 lithographs, 13 linocuts, 8 paintings and three rare plates, from one of the 20th century’s most influential artists, each telling a different story.

Organized in partnership with the Claude Picasso Archives, “Picasso – Creatures & Creativity” focuses on Pablo Picasso’s favorite theme, the human figure. The exhibition takes guests on a step-by-step journey through the famed artist’s thought progression and creative process behind his painting and printmaking.

“‘Picasso: Creatures & Creativity’ is a unique exhibit offering visitors the opportunity to dive into the mind and life of Picasso,” said Tarissa Tiberti, executive director of the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art. “Additionally, guests will be enveloped by the insatiable curiosity and artistic vision of one of history’s most intriguing and iconic artists.”

Similar to most artists, Picasso drew inspiration from his life experiences. The women around him had a tremendous influence on his art, which changed whenever a new muse entered his life. The various mediums he used to share his sentiments and influences spanned multiple periods. The exhibit showcases Picasso’s modern work from 1938 – 1962.

One of the portraits in the exhibit, Profile of a Woman with Blue Hair, 1938,  has never been shown in public. The piece is from Picasso's estate’s private collection, which makes it that much more unique. This is the perfect time to showcase the piece because this exhibits’ purpose is the focus on Picasso’s love of the human figure and how the people that surrounded him influenced his life and became his muses. This exhibit focuses on Dora Maar, Françoise Gilot and Jacqueline Roque.  The piece represents his relationship with Dora Maar, which was eccentric and dramatic. The palette is sad and dark not only because of the relationship, but because Picasso was not allowed to exhibit during the war.   There is no Picasso signature.  He only signed the work he sold and this piece is not signed by him because it belonged to his private estate. When guests look at the piece they should feel emotional and get a sensation; you can appreciate the art while getting close and experiencing the details and brush strokes.  After the exhibit closes in January, this piece will go back to his estate and into his private collection.

The new exhibition is on view through January 10, 2016. Tickets will be $19; $16 for Nevada residents and seniors 65 and older; and $14 for students, teachers and military with valid ID. Children 12 and younger are free.

BGFA is open daily 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Last admissions are sold 30 minutes prior to closing. Guests also may enjoy complimentary daily docent tours at 2 p.m.
