The Venetian and The Palazzo Usher in the Year of the Horse in Magnificent Style

In honor of Chinese New Year 2014, The Venetian and The Palazzo welcomed the “Year of the Horse” on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 with a traditional lion and dragon dance. Chef Bobby Flay Brings Bobby's Burger Palace to the Las Vegas Strip

Celebrity Chef and restauranteur Bobby Flay opened his 18th location nationwide of Bobby’s Burger Palace last Wednesday, January 29th at 3750 Las Vegas Boulevard South in front of City Center and adjacent to City Center Drive.

During its Grand Opening celebration, Clark County Commissioner Mary Beth Scow and Chef Flay were on hand to officiate over the ribbon cutting ceremony at 10am which was followed by Mayor Caroline Goodman presenting Flay with the Key to the City.

The strip location is the first of its kind in Las Vegas and on the West Coast and also the first to feature Bobby's newly revamped and expanded menu of signature burgers (prepared with your choice of certified angus beef, ground turkey or whole chicken breast), including the new Vegas Burger, created specially for this location, made with white American cheese, Fresno red chiles, and BBQ potato chips.

Prior to opening the doors to the public at noon, there was a special media luncheon.  Bobby was on and and addressed the crowd, saying it was “My dream to have my own Burger place. When it comes down to it, I am a burger guy. I opened the first (Burger Palace) in Long Island 6 six years ago and I knew to be a success, you have to have all three keys...great burgers, fries and shakes...a very American concept.”

Bobby stated he wanted to do something “explosive” to create a contrast in texture.  So, when dining at BBP, customers can, at no additional cost, order any burger crunchified, which means it comes topped with a layer of potato chips between the bun and patty that adds a delicious crunch.

For a healthier option, all burgers can be served topless where the burger or whole chicken breast is stacked on a bed of greens minus the bun. The menu also includes the Crunch Salad with chopped vegetables, romaine, crispy tortillas, white cheddar cheese cubes and balsamic dressing.

Side dishes include hand cut french fries served with BBP Fry Sauce (Bobby's own blend of mayonnaise, roasted red and chipotle peppers and spices), Sweet Potato Fries and Beer Battered Onion Rings. For those who can't make up their mind, a new feature on BBP's new menu is the “Half and Half”, which allows diners to order a combination of two sides of their choice. The menu also  features a Griddled Cheese with American, Swiss, Cheddar an Monterey Jack cheeses and tomato, and a newly added Griddled Pimento Cheese and Bacon Sandwich.

To satisfy the sweet tooth, 10 milkshakes and malteds are available including two new flavors, Mint Chocolate Chip and Mocha Caramel, along with popular staples such as Vanilla Bean, Dark Chocolate, Blueberry Pomegranate and my personal favorite, the sinfully delicious Pistacchio.  The restaurant also serves up bottled sodas, iced tea, lemonade, 16 bottled beers and glasses of red and white wine to quench any thirst and also features BBP's first Margarita Bar.

“My goal is to get you to crave my burgers”, Bobby emphasized. As someone who had the privilege of sampling several of the tasty menu items, I have to say that is a done deal.

While their food and drinks are being prepared and delivered, guests have the option of sitting inside at the 54 seat counter or the spacious outdoor patio for al fresco dining on the strip. BBP Vegas is open 7 days a week from 10 am to midnight. Burgers range from $8.50 to $9.50.

Pawn Stars Parody, Pawn Shop Live! Opens at Golden Nugget

PAWN SHOP LIVE! a parody of the story behind HISTORY Channel's smash hit reality show, “Pawn Stars,”   opened at the Gordie Brown Showroom inside the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas on Tuesday, January 21.

The comedy production, created by Emmy award-winning producer Derek Stonebarger, is based on the story of the world's most famous and beloved pawn shop, Gold & Silver Pawn in downtown Las Vegas. PAWN SHOP LIVE! includes story contributions from Rick Harrison and the Harrison family, the break-out stars of the TV show who have fully endorsed the production.

“We have been laughing at ourselves since before ‘Pawn Stars’ gained success and every minute since then after it hit the air,” said Rick Harrison. “Why not get involved with these guys, add a real element to their show and enjoy the ride all the way to the bank …or the poor house,” he joked.

With seven live actors (including Kady Heard in multiple roles) and two female dancers, as well as a puppet, PAWN SHOP LIVE! features celebrity guests and surprises - even the real “Pawn Stars” will appear on stage as often as their filming schedule permits. The on-stage characters are lampooned versions of Rick Harrison, Austin “Chumlee” Russell, Corey "Big Hoss" Harrison and Richard “The Old Man” Harrison - better known as Slick (Sean Critchfield), Chump (Garret Grant), Lil Boss (Gus Langley) and Old Fart (a puppet, manipulated and voiced by Enoch Scott).

Directed and co-written by Troy Heard, the show begins with a young Slick Garrison struggling with a debilitating illness which forces him to drop out of school and into a world of home schooling. Slick grows into a book- and street-smart genius using his experiences and life lessons, often taught from his father - a puppet named Old Fart - to eventually influence the world with his knowledge and art of the deal.

Working the family business, Slick is joined by his son, Lil Boss, and his son's dim-witted friend, Chump, who become international superstars in the process. Stonebarger developed the concept of the show while starring in Oscar: A Good Man, a play he created about former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman. Stonebarger is an award winning filmmaker and Emmy® award-winning television producer.

The SMITH CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS has received a $100,000 grant from Disney to fund the DISNEY MUSICAL IN SHOOLS PROGRAM, an outreach initiative that creates sustainable theatre programs in elementary schools.

Disney Musicals in Schools was launched in response to Disney Theatrical Group’s concern that low-income students in urban, public schools were not afforded equitable access to the arts. After successfully offering the program in New York City schools, Disney Theatrical Group began partnering with organizations in other communities around the United States. The Smith Center marks the second such partnership, following a successful launch at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville.

Theatre activities address imagination, creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, communication skills, and so many more goals of classroom learning. As part of the program, The Smith Center and Disney Theatrical Group trained and placed teaching artists in after-school programs. The teaching artists’ roles are to produce the chosen Disney KIDS musical and work with educators to create a sustainable theatre program on their campus. At no cost to them, the schools received performance rights, educational support materials and guidance from the teaching artists.

On Feb. 4, The Smith Center hosted a culminating Student Share Celebration, at which each school had the rare opportunity to perform a selection from its show on Southern Nevada’s premier stage in Reynolds Hall. Josh Strickland, current star of VEGAS! The Show and past star of Tarzan on Broadway, hosted the event.

The Smith Center will select five new schools to participate in the program during the 2014-2015 school year. Disney KIDS musicals, created in partnership with Music Theatre International (MTI), are about 30 minutes in length, and have been adapted from the classic Disney films Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, The Aristocats, Cinderella, The Jungle Book and Winnie the Pooh.
