Warren Moon and Pro Football Hall of Fame Awards Scholarships to Six Students

Pro football Hall of Famer Warren Moon has given back to high school students in need around the country by awarding scholarships to ensure their continued education for the past 25 years. Moon recognized the 2013 class of the Warren Moon Hall of Fame Scholarship inside SCORE! at the Luxor Hotel Casino Las Vegas in a ceremony on Thursday, June 6. This year’s six recipients included local students Joshua Mayfield from Chaparral High School, who will be attending UNLV this fall, and Carlos Martin from Las Vegas High School; as well as Jared Lebowitz from La Cañada Flintridge, Calif., recruited to play quarterback for UNLV this fall; Max Fang from San Diego, Calif.; Meret Fakhory from Los Angeles, Calif.; and Erich Olschewski from South Jordan, Utah.

Other VIPs who appeared alongside Moon included Pro Football Hall of Fame CEO George Veras, and Pro Bowler Hank Bauer, formerly of the San Diego Chargers.

“When I first started playing professional football in Canada, my agent Leigh Steinberg stressed the importance of always giving back,” says Warren Moon, 2006 Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductee. “Focusing on giving high school students a chance at a college education is my way of doing that. My goal is to have every scholarship recipient ‘pay it forward’ by creating a similar opportunity for those in need later in their lives.”

Warren Moon Hall of Fame Scholarship Recipients are selected based on three criteria: be on track to graduate the year the scholarship is awarded; have a financial need; and be active in their local communities. The scholarships are not limited to student-athletes in high school so anyone who meets the criteria is eligible.

“Our company, Sports 1 Marketing with Warren Moon as the founder and president, is very proud to implement and keep up this important scholarship program in the past three decades.” says David Meltzer, CEO of Sports 1 Marketing. “It’s a great feeling to be able to give back to the community on a regular basis like this, which is part of our core mission that also includes business development and partnership branding for national and international brands. All-in-all, we have a lot of fun doing what we do.”

Moon typically awards several scholarships annually. A special situation this year led to an additional honoree. Jared Lebowitz was originally chosen but was then awarded a football scholarship to the University of Nevada – Las Vegas.  Due to his UNLV scholarship, Lebowitz asked that his scholarship money be awarded to another student. Lebowitz will still be honored at the ceremony alongside with the sixth recipient, Joshua Mayfield from Las Vegas High School, who coincidentally will also be attending UNLV for the fall semester.

“During his playing career, Warren exemplified what it took to be a Hall of Famer, both on and off the field,” says George Veras, CEO of Pro Football Hall of Fame Enterprise. “He is giving an incredible opportunity to these well-deserving students, perhaps even giving them a future when they thought all hope was lost. We are honored to be associated with Warren and are excited about the good things these young men and women scholarship recipients will be doing for their communities.”
