Las Vegas Woman’s Expo at Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino

A tidal wave of estrogen rolled into town on Sunday, November 14, invading the Convention Center at the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino.  The Las Vegas Woman’s Expo (sponsored by Las Vegas Woman Magazine) brought together over 150 vendors and 3500 women.

Admission was free, but women had to register either online or in person to gain entrance to the Expo.  Large pink goodie bags were given to the first 500 attendees, containing, among other things, samples of crunchy caramel treats, glittery lip gloss, Paymon’s Mediterranean Seasoning, and of course, the latest issue of Las Vegas Woman Magazine.

The next several thousand women to attend, including your humble correspondent, had to make do with the free samples and appetizers that were featured in a stroll down the female-festooned aisles of the convention floor.

Amid the colorful (and plentiful) clothing and jewelry displays were booths offering products and services

A portion of the Expo proceeds benefited Candelighter's Childhood Cancer Foundation, and donations were collected at registration.

Las Vegas Woman Editor in Chief Jennifer Florendo was on hand to introduce the Eccoci fashion show, and opened with the Expo’s most famous line, “This is where Las Vegas Woman Magazine comes to life.”  Four local ladies won a hair, makeup and fashion makeover, courtesy of Eccoci and Destination Spa.  The women debuted their new look on the runway during a 2:00 fashion show.

Food samples by Paymon’s Mediterranean (pita bread with regular hummus or a pesto variety), Famous Dave’s barbecue (pulled pork) and Rhythm Kitchen’s jambalaya (chicken, sausage and rice) caused small lines but big satisfaction.  Complimentary cocktail samples from Blue Martini included a mango version and a green concoction with the last name of “blue.”  I had to try both – which is why I can’t tell you blue’s first name.

Other booths featured jewelry, clothing, hair accessories and cosmetics; one even offered free Facebook profile picture updates in case you finally got tired of your high school prom standby.  Raffle tickets were good for a prize drawing of a $3000 turkey filled with spa certificates, massages, and dinners and another giveaway promised a diamond necklace for some lucky neck.

The Health Department (SNHD) was on the scene providing flu vaccinations.  For those who passed on this opportunity, Davis Funeral Services was there to make arrangements in advance.  State Farm insurance gave out piggy banks, but even they were out-pigged by some of the offerings.

Bakeries were popular booth stops, and cheesecake samples (Just A Bite Cheesecakes), brownies (Nothing Bundt Cakes) and confections on a stick (Cake Popalicious - one was a red velvet coconut crunch) were handed out, one diabolical inch at a time.  Sin City Delights scored with warm, crunchy caramel nuggets that threatened to bring out the grazing livestock in me (and others).

Fashion Show Chic

Curves, a female-only fitness establishment vied with Honeybaked ham for women’s waistlines.  Interaction Dating, an online service, featured attraction to the opposite sex, while the Pink Stinker (a hot pepper spray with pink dye marker) showed women how to get away from unwanted attention.

Cosmetic surgery, fertility experts, natural health products, storage facilities and travel companies also lured the crowd.  Distinct Energy Performance offered electricity conserving ECObulbs to the conservation-minded lady of the house.

On-site Dental provided teeth whitening on the spot, and Lumineers personnel sat behind a huge basket of Colgate Total samples, selling tooth constructions that would do away with worrying about whiteness at all.

The Expo illustrated that age-old proverb about women: it’s their prerogative to change their mind.  And their clothes, and their teeth and their face, and their handbags…  Only the Las Vegas woman gets to do it in the entertainment capital of the world, which puts the odds most definitely in her favor.
