If you happened to visit the Rio Hotel and Casino during August 6 to 9, 2015 you would probably have seen some folks dressed up in some mighty strange costumes. Actually, they wouldn't have been strange at all if you are a “Trekkie”. They were part of the Star Trek group that beamed down for the annual Las Vegas Star Trek Convention held in the huge Rio convention center.
The convention is produced by Creation Entertainment and basically involves everything you know or wanted to know about Star Trek. It includes numerous discussion groups on such topics as a Smithsonian Museum presentation on the restoring of the original Starship Enterprise. Creation Entertainment presented a special program celebrating the life and times of the late Leonard Nimoy AKA Mr Spock.
Attendees were able -for a price to - obtain autographed pictures of their favorite Star Trek characters including William Shatner himself, Miss Joan Collins, Anson Williams, and Brent Spiner, who played Data. Pricing started at $100 for William Shatner AKA Captain Kirk and were less for some of the other characters.
Saturday August 8 was the highlight of the convention. It started with a costume contest as Borgs, Kleons, and Star Trek commanders paraded through the exhibit area. Denise Gross who was dressed as Species 8472 won the best in show. Shatner made a presentation to a packed audience in the main auditorium, which was followed shortly by a discussion group involving the cast of Star Trek Voyager.
A convention room was filled with vendors selling everything from Star Trek costumes to Tribbles. But, the highlight of this and previous conventions were the costumed folks attending the event. Cameras abounded as the aliens took photos of each other.
If you really want to get the true feel of the excitement generated by this event, plan to attend next year’s 50th Anniversary celebration from August 3 to 7 at the Rio.
