Las Vegas Marathon Features 300 + Elvi
My husband proudly ran the New York Marathon twice. So when the marathon
came to Las Vegas two years ago… well, he wasn’t ready to run it again,
so we became volunteers at the registration area.
The marathon is in its third year now. It grew from 10,698 participants
in 2005 to 16,047 in 2006. This year’s runners came from all 50 states
and more than 40 nations.

The convention center at Mandalay Bay served as check-in headquarters
and included a huge Quality of Life Expo. It included the regular stuff
that can be seen and purchased at most marathons such as foot care
items, running clothing, information on other upcoming marathons, and
heath care products.

A few items were distinctively Vegas.

But this is Las Vegas. Our marathon included 308 Elvi. That’s plural for
Elvis. When I arrived at the Expo there were eight Elvi posing for
photos with the official sign.

And when I worked the goodie bag counter, they began showing up to get
their shirts and goodie bags. They came in all shapes and sizes from
children to senior citizens. The Elvi hoped to break a record and become
part of the Guinness Book of Records. I hope they did it.
It was fun meeting the runners as they claimed their shirts and goodies.
We’ll be back there again next year. And so will the Elvi.
